He graduated from Utah State in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and earned his master’s degree in educational counseling from the University of Phoenix (Ogden, Utah) in 2001. He lettered twice football at Utah State, a two-year starter at guard, and was a team captain as a senior when he earned first-team All-Academic honors. He was also active in multi-cultural student affairs, and coordinated the firstever luau at Utah State. It was at the luau where he hooked up with USU SID Mike Strauss (a CU graduate) as the two teamed for a traditional Polynesian dance in complete garb. That led to their audition and subsequent filming of a commercial for Aloha Airlines, where Kema played a Samoan native teaching Strauss, an exhausted American sales rep, how to just “let things go and celebrate.” Born November 28, 1971 in Hawaii, he graduated from Cerritos (Calif.) High School, where he lettered in football. He is married to the former Stephanie Gillette. KEN KLINGLER Assistant Ticket Manager Ken Klingler is in his fourth year as assistant ticket manager at the University of Colorado, as he was named to the position on June 1, 2001. He is in his 10th year overall at CU, as he joined the department in 1995 as a ticketing assistant. Klingler, 39, came to CU from the Denver Reception & Diagnostic Center, where he was a medical records clerk for nearly three years. He also had a similar position for 18 months with Denver General Hospital. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps for seven-and-a-half years, attaining the rank of sergeant. While a Marine, he was stationed in Misawa, Japan, Monterrey, Calif., and a tour of the Mediterranean. Born November 8, 1964 in Leavenworth, Kan., he graduated from Blytheville (Ark.) High School, where he lettered in tennis. His hobbies include home brewing, stamp collecting, music, reading and old movies. MATTHEW ROEDER Golden Buffalo Marching Band Director Matthew Roeder is in his fourth year as Director of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band, assuming the role first for the 2001 season. Roeder, 31, is the Associate Director of Bands for the University of Colorado’s acclaimed music school, and is currently A.B.D. in his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Instrumental Conducting and Literature from CU, where he was also a graduate assistant in the department of bands for two years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 1995, and received his Masters of Music in Music Education with a conducting emphasis from the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University in 2000. He previously taught in the public schools for a number of years at Parkville High School in Baltimore, Md., while also serving as the Performing Arts department chairman. In this capacity, he was recognized by the Maryland General Assembly for outstanding service and dedication to Parkville and the students in the PA department. 444 Roeder is an active member of the College Band Director’s National Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, National Band Association, National Music Educators Conference, Colorado Bandmasters Association, Colorado Music Educators Association, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi. He also remains active as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor throughout the United States. Born May 27, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio, he graduated from Northmont (Clayton, Ohio) High School in 1991. He is married to the former Cheryl Laws, and the couple has one child, Austin (3), with another due in August. KATHY SULENTIC Assistant Director/Academic & International Programs Kathy Sulentic is in her fifth year as an assistant director in CU’s academic support office, as she joined the Colorado staff in April 2000. Her main responsibilities are with the football and skiing teams, and she works with international programs. Sulentic, 30, came to CU from the University of Nebraska, where she had worked for two years as an assistant academic counselor. While at NU, she worked as a teaching assistant for former football coach Tom Osborne for his coaching football and graduate class. She graduated from Northern Iowa in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in history, and earned her master’s from Nebraska in 1998 in the same field of study. While a graduate student at NU, she also worked as a tutor and mentor for several Cornhusker athletes. Born June 10, 1974 in Waterloo, Iowa, she graduated from Columbus High in Waterloo in 1992, where she lettered as an athletic trainer. She is single. SCOTT SWAIN Assistant Director/ Academics & Eligibility Scott Swain is in his second year as an assistant director in CU’s academic support office, as he joined the Buffalo staff in August 2003. His main responsibilities are to monitor initial and continuing eligibility for CU’s 300-plus student-athletes through each respective college, as well as the production of various NCAA, Big 12 and Compliance reports and serving on numerous university committees. Swain, 32, came to CU from Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio) where he had worked the previous five years as an academic coordinator, providing support and counseling to student-athletes. He also coordinated the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program, which included an academic course for all freshman athletes, speakers on selected topics, and community service projects. He earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies education from Ohio State University in 1995, and earned his master’s degree in sport administration from Miami University in 1997. At Miami, he served as an athletic academic advisor for all student-athletes before moving on to Xavier. Swain also coached as cross country and track & field coach at several institutions. During his three years at Miami, he served as an assistant, where he coached nine Mid-American Conference Champions, two NCAA All-Americans and a 1996 USA Olympic Trials Qualifier. He then served as head cross country and track coach at Xavier for five years, where during his tenure, both the men’s and women’s programs posted their highest conference finishes in school history along with an Atlantic 10 Conference individual champion and a 2000 USA Olympic Trials Qualifier. He ended his career as the win-

ningest coach in Xavier track & field history. Born October 6, 1971 in Columbus, Ohio, he graduated from Upper Arlington (Ohio) High School in 1990, where he lettered in cross country and track. He is married to the former Nicole Falvo, who is a doctor of clinical psychology. BETH WELLIK Assistant Director for Academics and Career Development Beth Wellik is in her third year as the assistant director for academic and career development in the office of academic support, having joined the athletic department staff on January 7, 2002. Wellik, 32, came to CU from her alma mater, Oregon State, where she was the assistant director for academic services from 1998 to 2001, working specifically with men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Prior to her three-year stint in Corvallis, she was an athletic academic advisor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., working with all of the Broncs’ 15 intercollegiate sports that compete as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. She earned her undergraduate degree in liberal studies in 1994 and her master’s degree in college student services administration in 1997, both from Oregon State. A four-year letterwinner in soccer at OSU, the Beavers compiled a 43-32 overall record from 1993-96 and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1994, dropping a 3-0 decision to Washington in the first round. She was an honorable mention Academic All-PAC 10 performer during her senior season. Born January 4, 1972 in Laguna Niguel, Calif., she lettered in both soccer (defense/sweeper) and volleyball (back row) at Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, Calif., where she graduated in 1990. Her hobbies include hiking, running, reading and watching movies. She also enjoys personal travel and sports and is single. 445 KAREN WYATT FOOTBALL STATISTICS CREW Assistant Director for Learning & Personal Development Karen Wyatt is in her third year as the assistant director for learning and personal development in the office of academic support, joining the department on July 22, 2002. Wyatt, 51, joined the athletic staff from across the Boulder campus, where she worked in several academic areas between 1989 and 2002. For seven years (1994-98, 2001-02), she was a counselor and advisor in the Academic Excellence Program (SASC), where she provided extensive advising and personal counseling for atrisk students and developed individualized programs including study skills, tutorial services, time management and both survival and organizational skills. She also worked as an internship counselor, a career counselor and recruiting coordinator. Prior to CU-Boulder, she worked four years as a career services counselor at the University of Denver. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975 with a degree in behavioral disabilities (special education). She then worked as a special education teacher for a couple of years, and went back to UW to earn her master’s in 1981 in counseling and guidance. She has also done some MBA course work at the University of Phoenix. Born March 29, 1953 in Orange, Texas, she graduated North High School (Sheboygan, Wis.) in 1971, where she was a varsity cheerleader. Her hobbies including running, biking, hiking the backcountry and telemarking. She is married to John Anderson and they have two children, Elizabeth (13) and Matthew (9). The University of Colorado has one of, if not the, most experienced and respected football statistic crews in the nation. Dave Einspahr is entering his 18th year as CU’s crew chief, assuming the role in September, 1987. Einspahr is also the stat crew chief for the NFL Denver Broncos, the NBA Denver Nuggets and is the main official scorer for the Colorado Rockies baseball team. Other members of the crew include play-by-play typist Lee Speer, who is in his 33rd season, Jack Landon (31st season), Al Bartlett (29th season), Gene DiTolla (20th season), Art Rosener (19th season), Rocky Rockafellow (18th season), Dan Riley (15th season), Bill Taylor (14th season) and Jack Bartlett (third season). DiTolla and Rosener have also been members of the Broncos’ stat crew since the 1970s.
