American prior to his senior year, only the third Buff afforded the<br />

honor at the time… A two-time all-Big Eight performer (1967-<br />

68)…The inaugural winner of the John Mack Award as a senior<br />

S, 6-0, 200, 3L, Durango, Colo. (Durango)<br />

A first-team All-American as a senior in<br />

1970, selected by the Walter Camp<br />

Foundation… A three-year starter, he was<br />

considered as the leader in the CU secondary for each of those<br />

three years (1968-70), known as one of the hardest hitters in the<br />

defensive backfield… Did not miss a game as a junior, despite<br />

playing a third of the season with a painful rib injury… Played<br />

some cornerback as a sophomore, but the bulk of his career<br />

action came at safety… Had 20 career pass deflections, which set<br />

a CU record at the time of his graduation… His eight career<br />

interceptions tied for fifth in the record book… He did not play<br />

professionally.<br />

A consensus first-team All-American as a<br />

senior in 1996 (Associated Press, AFCA,<br />

Walter Camp and Football News… He<br />

became the first native Hawaiian player to<br />

earn consensus All-America honors in 51 years (Herman<br />

Wedemeyer did it in 1945 for St. Mary’s)… A Playboy Preseason<br />

All-American prior to his senior year… A first-team All-Big Eight<br />

performer in 1995 as a junior, and a unanimous first-team All-Big<br />

12 team member as a senior, when he was co-winner of the John<br />

Mack Award as CU’s outstanding offensive player… Set a school<br />

(outstanding lineman as selected by teammates), when he was<br />

also a Buff co-captain… He served three years in the Marine Corps<br />

between high school and enrolling at Colorado… A second-round<br />

draft pick of the Boston Patriots (32nd overall) in the 1969 AFL-<br />

NFL Draft… He played in 123 games as a pro: New England<br />

(Boston, 1969-72), Buffalo Bills (1973-76), Denver Broncos (1977)<br />

and Detroit Lions (1978).<br />

the spring Romig (top senior-to-be), Casotti (top-junior-to-be) and<br />

Irwin (top sophomore-to-be) awards… A first round choice by<br />

New Orleans in the 1997 NFL Draft (10th overall, the highest position<br />

a Colorado offensive lineman has ever been drafted)… He<br />

played his first five pro seasons with New Orleans (1997-2001)<br />

before moving on to Jacksonville.
