International… He was a Playboy<br />
Preseason All-American prior to his senior year… He was the winner<br />
of the Jim Thorpe Award in 1994, presented to the nation’s top<br />
defensive back; he was the second Buff to win the Thorpe and the<br />
fourth CU player to win a postseason trophy… A three-time firstteam<br />
All-Big Eight performer his sophomore through senior seasons,<br />
the fifth Buff to ac<strong>com</strong>plish the feat of be<strong>com</strong>ing a three-time<br />
all-league selection… He won the Hang Tough Award, to the player<br />
who overcame the most adversity his senior year; his adversity?<br />
He played the final 10 games of the regular season with a nagging<br />
turf toe injury and still played to an All-American level… His 15<br />
career interceptions rank as the second most in Colorado history,<br />
while his 20 pass deflections tied for the seventh most by a Buff at<br />
the time of his graduation… A third round selection by<br />
HALE IRWIN<br />

Irwin had one of the rarest two-sport <strong>com</strong>binations<br />
in college athletics, as he earned<br />
a <strong>com</strong>bined six letters in football and<br />
golf… After playing quarterback as a<br />
sophomore, he became a two-time first-team all-Big Eight selection<br />
at weak side safety 1965 and 1966, making nine interceptions...<br />
He was a two-time Academic All-Big Eight team member as<br />
a junior and senior… In 1989, he was selected to CU’s 25-member<br />
All-Century Football Team for CU’s first 100 years of football… But<br />
he made his mark in the game of golf, first at Colorado, and then<br />
professionally: a two-time Big Eight Conference champion (1966,<br />
1967) his CU single-season mark for stroke average he set as a<br />
junior (72.04) stood for 37 years… He capped his collegiate career<br />
by claiming medalist honors at the 1967 NCAA Championships…<br />
As a professional, he had 20 PGA Tour wins, including three U.S.<br />
Open titles (1974, 1979, 1990)… He has since be<strong>com</strong>e the all-time<br />
leading money winner on the Champions (Senior) PGA Tour,<br />
thanks to a Senior Tour record 35 wins through 2002… His son<br />

Associated Press as a senior in 1995 (he<br />
was an honorable mention selection by<br />
UPI)… A first-team All-Big Eight performer<br />
that season as well, when he played the most snaps from scrimmage<br />
(742) by any player on the team… It was about as perfect a<br />
senior year a lineman could have, as he did not allow a quarterback<br />
sack or a pressure, and wasn’t called for a single penalty…<br />
He was the first offensive lineman to score a touchdown for CU in<br />

Jacksonville in the 1995 NFL Draft (71st overall)… He played in 77<br />
career NFL games with Jacksonville (1995-98), Chicago (1999) and<br />
Atlanta (2001).<br />

Steve followed in his footsteps, also lettering on the Buffalo golf<br />
team in the mid-1990s, and nephew Heath was an All-American in<br />
football… His younger brother, Phil, was the first CU athlete to<br />
grace the cover of Sports Illustrated (pictured after CU ended<br />
Penn State’s 31-game unbeaten streak)… He is a member of both<br />
the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (inducted 1986) and the<br />
Colorado Golf Hall of Fame (inducted 1974), as well as an inaugural<br />
member of the CU Golf Hall of Fame (inducted 1989).<br />

went on to star in professional golf… A fourth round choice by<br />
New England in the 1996 NFL Draft (101st overall)… Has played<br />
with New England (1996-99), Miami (2000-01), St. Louis (2002) and<br />
signed on with Denver for 2003.
