senior in 1996 by the Football News, as he<br />

was the unanimous first-team All-Big 12<br />

quarterback in the conference’s inaugural<br />

season… That same year, he was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas<br />

Award and a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award… Set<br />

numerous passing records as a senior, when he passed for 3,156<br />

yards and 22 touchdowns… Was off to a terrific start in ’95 until he<br />

was sidelined with a torn ACL (he was such a gamer that after<br />

missing a game, he tried to <strong>com</strong>eback but a specially fitted brace<br />

couldn’t supply enough support)… At the time of the injury, he<br />

was the nation’s leading passer with a 189.4 rating… Redshirted in<br />

1993… Started his career as a true freshman in 1992, playing in<br />

seven games including two starts (Oklahoma, Nebraska); he threw<br />

for 418 yards and five touchdowns against the Sooners, both highs<br />

in a debut for a CU starting quarterback; he also threw a 92-yard<br />

touchdown pass to Charles Johnson, which stood for 10 years as<br />

the longest pass play in school history… In 18 career starts,<br />

including bowls, he led CU to a 14-3-1 record… Second all-time at<br />

A consensus first-team All-American as a<br />

senior in 1988, when the Associated Press,<br />

UPI, Walter Camp, The Sporting News and<br />

the Football News honored him… Led the<br />

nation in punting in ’88 with a 45.04 average, the first Buff to do so<br />

since Zack Jordan had 38 years earlier… Earned national Player of<br />

the Week accolades on Sept. 24, 1988, when he averaged 59.8<br />

yards on five punts against Oregon State… Unanimous All-Big<br />

Eight as a senior… Had two punts over 70 yards, including a 77yard<br />

bomb against Colorado State, and owned a 49.3 average on<br />

24 punts inside the Buff 30… Also played tight end early in his<br />

Thorpe Award, presented to the nation’s top defensive back… His<br />

27 pass deflections were the second most in CU history when he<br />

<strong>com</strong>pleted his career, and his 12 interceptions were fourth; not<br />

included in the count was an interception he made at the end of<br />

the ’91 Orange Bowl against Notre Dame, which helped seal the<br />

Buffs’ first national championship… Won the Lee Willard Award as<br />

CU’s outstanding freshman player (1988)… Returned punts for the<br />

first time as a senior, ranking 20th in the NCAA (11.4 per return);<br />

had 10 returns for 167 yards against Kansas State that year, both<br />

Colorado with 14 games of 200-plus yards passing; his five of 400<br />

or more and seven 300-plus are school bests… Ended his career<br />

by being named the MVP of the ’96 Holiday Bowl, when he <strong>com</strong>pleted<br />

25 of 45 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns in<br />

Colorado’s 33-21 win over Washington… Older brother, Ty, won<br />

the Heisman Trophy as a junior at Brigham Young in 1990… A seventh<br />

round selection by Philadelphia in the 1997 NFL Draft, he has<br />

spent his entire career with the Eagles (1997-2003); though basically<br />

the back-up signal caller, he has spot-started on occasion.<br />
