Afghan officials say that the
assassination of former Afghan
president and chief peace negotiator
Burhanuddin Rabbani
was masterminded by Pakistan's
intelligence agency. An
investigative team appointed
by Afghan President Harmid
Karzai says it has evidence and
a confession from a man who
was involved in the killing.
Pakistan has angrily denied the
accusations, with its foreign
ministry releasing a statement
saying that the idea was "irresponsible"
and that Kabul
should instead be considering
why Afghans in favour of peace
with Pakistan "are systematically
being removed from the
scene and killed".
Syrian dissidents have announced
the formation of a
Libyan-style council to unite
the anti-government opposition.
The Syrian National
Council hopes that it will be
able to present a united face to
the international community
and offer ordinary Syrians an
alternative to President Bashar
Assad. They believe that the
complexities of the Syrian situation
have thus far deterred the
international community from
taking action. It's also thought
that this may mobilise the Syrian
public, many of whom have
been reluctant to support
the scattered dissident effort
out of fears that if Assad was
dislodged, a power vacuum
would result.
Three scientists who worked
on the immune system have
been awarded this year's
Nobel prize for medicine.
Bruce Beutler, Jules Hoffman
and Ralph Steinman
were rewarded for their work
in revolutionising scientists'
understanding of the immune
system. But there's a truly
tragic twist: the Nobel Foundation
announced the prize
on Monday without being
aware that Ralph Steinman
died of pancreatic cancer on
A mosque in northern Israel was set on fire on Monday (Reuters)
Friday – and the rules of the Nobel
prizes state that only people
still alive can receive the gong. A
decision is expected within the
next 24 hours about whether
Steinman can be awarded the
prize posthumously.
The police headquarters in Al-
Baghdadi, western Iraq, was taken
over by armed insurgents yesterday,
resulting in a two-hour
siege. The insurgents were disguised
as police officers, and set
off two explosions before seizing
the compound together with 15
hostages, including the top police
officer and the mayor. Security
forces managed to storm the
building two hours later, but the
police chief and four others were
