13.4 With the agriculture becoming competitive under the new<br />
economic order with decreasing subsidies, Weather Forecasting<br />
and Agromet Advisories need to be improved and made<br />
accessible to small and marginal farmers at their doorstep,<br />
through the modern <strong>Information</strong> and Communications<br />
Technologies (ICTs). Demands for agricultural technology are<br />
changing and diversifying (Rita Sharma, 1999) 53 :<br />
• technologies to break the stagnation in the yield growth in<br />
intensive irrigated agriculture,<br />
• technologies for dryland farming which accounts for 2/3 rd of<br />
the country’s cultivated land,<br />
• technologies for diversification of farming systems for<br />
employment and income generation and in high value<br />
commercial crops, and development of sustainable<br />
