2.4 Agriculture has undergone several fundamental changes<br />
during the 20 th Century, including extensive dependence on farm<br />
machinery, intensive fertilizer and agrochemical management,<br />
crop breeding, high yielding hybrid varieties, and genetic<br />
manipulation. <strong>Agricultural</strong> development requires resources,<br />
infrastructure, technology, and institutions.<br />
2.5 Farmers in rural areas continue to experience great<br />
disparity in income compared with other sectors, and revert to<br />
natural resources as the most accessible sources of livelihood.<br />
Higher per Capita consumption of natural resources in several<br />
developed countries threatens global sustainability. Degradation<br />
of natural resources is a key threat to socio-economic<br />
development, and to global environment (e.g., climate change and<br />
loss of biodiversity).<br />
