Languages Around the World T H E T I T A N V I E W PAGE 12 Congratulations to many world language students from Northview High School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2009 National Spanish Ex- aminations. Students from Northview High School earned a total of 57 gold, 74 silver and 48 bronze medals along with 70 honorable mentions.“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with well over 115,000 students participating in 2009.” Students from Northview High School have a long history of high achievement on these exams and participating students were taught by Spanish teachers Carrie Gutierrez, Zandra Horton, Susan Johnson, Patricia Rodriguez and Estela Valenciano. The Northview JCL is finishing up the 2008- 2009 year with many awards and accolades. The most recent and largest event was the state convention held at Rock Eagle. Over 1000 Latin Students representing different schools attended this convention in order to compete in various sports, arts, and tests. Northview was very successful in the oh-so-famous chariot races. The NHS JCL was first in the boys and girls chariot run. While some consider this a miraculous run, others see it as a form of redemption. At last year’s state convention, the JCL not only failed to win a title, but took a few casualties along the way. A new chariot and a new year brought victory and glory, but lacked the running over of a student. The NHS JCL brought home many academic awards in tests regarding subjects from Roman history to Greek derivatives. The list of academic awards was seemingly endless which reflects the fact that Northview continues to be a powerhouse in academics. The Northview JCL made history this past convention in the competition of Certamen or Latin quiz bowl. Our Novice team achieved 3rd in their division, while the Lower and Upper teams achieved 1st in their respective divisions. The current Upper level team has won three straight state titles, a feat that no other team has ever accomplished before. Northview had two students running for an office in the Georgia Junior Classical League. We are proud to announce that Arun Kumar and Parth Sehgal were successful in bids for President and Vice President respectively. We wish them a great term and hope that they will continue to bring honor to Northview. Twenty students from Northview will be attending this year’s national convention at the University of California Davis this summer. Though we will officially be representing Georgia, we hope to bring many awards back to Northview. Don’t have a cow – buy one! Looking for a way to encourage their students to speak more French in class, French teachers Catherine Francisse, Roya Schweinbeck and Valerie White put their heads together and came up with a creative solution - a cow! Instead of nagging and ranting at students (commonly known as “having a cow”), the three French teachers invented an a-moo-zing way of persuading students to stay in the target language. Students who speak English in class get a toy cow on the desk and have to perform a short penalty at the end of class. Juniors Kaylee Goss and Jessica McRoberts ruminated and decided to milk this class actvitity, turning it into a fundraiser for Oxfam. With help from the Chick-Fil-A, French classes held a competition fundraiser and raised over $200 for an Oxfam project to buy animals for Africa. Winning classes get a Chick-Fil-A tray, and the money collected will be used to buy animals for an African village. One cow costs $75, so enough money was raised to buy two cows and a goat. So no kidding when we say that once again, Northview French students are la crème de la crème! Ha Lim Yue, a Northview senior competed at the 4th "Chinese Bridge" US High School Chinese Speech Contest on April 17, 2009. She won the third place in the special group. The contestants came from 21 states this year. The final contest was held at the University of Massachusetts Confucius Institute in Boston. The contest aims to give students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in speaking Chinese language. Each student presented an individual speech and answered the questions in Chinese, then were judged by a panel of Chinese language teachers and language experts. Congratulations to Ha Lim Yue and Northview’s newly established Chinese Program.
www.northviewhigh.com Northview High School’s German Department has had one of its most successful years yet! 2008-2009 was full of activities and experiences that colleges look for in student achievement, both academically and personally. German students participated in or won: Declamation Contest, a poetry recital at Clemson State German Convention, a plethora of competitions offered to German students statewide in Covington, Ga. FLAG competition, a high visibility speaking contest for all World Languages around the state Governor’s Honors Program Northview Titan 1 st , a Langenscheidt Award winner 40 students participated in taking the National German Test. They also sang holiday carols in classrooms, German style. The German Club and National German Honor Society activities and community outreach traveled beyond Northview’s borders or within: Collected glasses for “Give the Gift of Sight” (40 pairs) Collected canned goods for North Fulton Charities’ Pantry (800 cans) VOLUME 7, ISSUE 3 Took an active part in the Relay for Life on the World Languages Team, helping to collect over $3000 and keep the team on the track for 12 hours! (Brrrr!, yawn) Sponsored a family for the holidays For our school: We sang holiday songs and gave out hot chocolate at the bus canopy Gave away prizes and held contests during National German Week Hosted a donut breakfast to the class who collected the most glasses for our drive Mrs. Laurie Rogers’ 2 nd period Hosted a table of fine German cuisine during International Night with the help of Kurt’s Restaurant Thank-you especially to the PTSA Mini-Grant committee for contributing $120 to the German Classroom library for the 2 nd year in a row!
