Preparing for an Excellent Future
“Fulton County has been my only employer
my entire adult life,” says Principal Peter
Zervakos. Mr. Z‟s office is a testament to thirty
years of distinguished service in the Fulton County
school system as a teacher and administrator. The
walls are lined with plaques, awards, certificates of
recognition, photos, artwork, letters from
appreciative students and parents, and a variety of
souvenirs and memorabilia from a lifetime of
school-related events. These memories will come
down from the walls and go home with Mr. Z on
June 30, 2009, his last official day as Principal of
Northview High School.
Mr. Z explains that the time is right for
leaving, and he has no regrets. “I‟ve been able to
accomplish the things I wanted to,” he says, “and I
feel I can leave on a personal high note.” His
future career plans are uncertain, but he looks
forward to switching gears and “putting my family
in the front seat for awhile, while I can still enjoy
them.” Spending more time with wife, Sally, and
their three daughters -- Elizabeth, 21, Rachel, 17,
and Danielle, 15 -- is a high priority for Mr. Z.
College Park High
School 1980. Mr. Z
was Band Director
1979 - 1983.
Peter and Sally Zervakos
first met when he was a
band director at Milton
High School and she was a
student teacher in chorus.
Their first date was a
Milton football game.
Sally went on to teach
general music at Findley
Oaks Elementary.
Mr. Z‟s passion for music
has stayed with him over
the years. He plays the
organ every Sunday at the
Hellenic Greek Orthodox
Cathedral, and has done so
since he was in the 11 th grade. He hopes to
continue working in the field of music even after
he retires from Northview, though he admits the
sudden change in the economy means he‟ll take a
look at other options as well.
As the
Principal of
Northview
since it
opened, Mr. Z
has put the
emphasis on
excellence, and
his recently Mr. Z at Northview 2009
named
replacement, Pam Spalla, agrees with that strategy:
“I think everyone in the building would equate Mr.
Z‟s name with words like „tradition‟, „high
expectations‟ and „good home training‟! As he
passes the torch to me, I plan on carrying on the
many traditions he started while continuing to
make this school a national landmark of
excellence. Together, Mr. Z and Dr. Macris have
made each of our students strive to live the quote
that graces the Food Court wall – „We are what we
repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act
but a habit.‟ (Aristotle)”
Mr. Z says, as the Principal of Northview,
“There is never a time when school is not on my
mind. It becomes your life.” NHS junior
swimmer Allison Dow recalls seeing him every
year at the quad meet in Chamblee. “This year I
saw him wearing our state title t-shirt, and I know
he was going to other school functions as well. He
must change his clothes a lot on days like that.”
This is a testament to his dedication in being a part
in every aspect of the students‟ lives.
Preparation for excellence is what has put
Northview firmly on the map. Mr. Z, along with
our administration and faculty, has given many
students an outstanding education and opened up
endless possibilities to utilize it.
We all wish Mr. Z much success in his
future endeavors, whatever they may be. One thing
we know for certain: Mr. Z will approach the next
phase in his life with the same passion for
excellence and commitment as he brought to
Northview High School.
From the Principal’s Desk:
G reetings Fellow Titans! Since the opening of Northview High School,
so much has been accomplished for which we all can be proud.
Please accept my congratulations for a great year and my appreciation for all
your support.
As the year draws to a close, please remember that these first seven years
are only the start of a journey to excellence. Complacency is not an option;
please be assured that every year will be better than those before. I had
the honor of being the founding principal of this school. Now, I pass the
torch to Ms. Spalla to continue a journey that has no end. I am fully confident
that she is the right person to lead our school to the next level of excellence!
Although I still cannot imagine not being an active participant in the life of
Northview, my heart tells me that it really is now time to focus on the more important role of being a
dad. I also look forward to devoting more time to my career as a musician. I hope to have many
employable years remaining to enjoy being the staff organist of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and as
conductor of the Hellenic Community Orchestra. And if everything works out as anticipated, I really
will be a high school band director again!
As always, if I can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Together, we will continue Ever
Upward and Onward as we strive to be the flagship school for all of Georgia. Please have a safe
and restful summer!
Peter F. Zervakos— Mr. Z.
My child had a very demanding schedule this
year and although I am proud of his motivation
to excel, I worry that he was often overwhelmed
by the workload. What should students
do if, after getting extra help from
teachers, they still do not understand the subject
matter?
First and most important, do not give up. It is not
unusual for students to sometime feel there is no
hope, and then a few weeks later the situation is
much more optimistic. Sometimes, students will
come to me in mid-semester almost begging to
be taken out of a class because there is no hope
of passing. After explaining that a change can
not be made until the end of the semester, we
usually agree to “do the best he/she can and let’s
see how it plays out.” In most cases, the student
ends up staying in the class for the next semester
because the situation did improve.
If your child is experiencing academic challenges,
now is the time to be proactive. Our counselors
Musing with Mr. Z….
are sponsoring study skills seminars and all teachers
offer help sessions and individual instruction
as needed. Parents have email access to all staff
members and may register for ParentConnect
through our website, www.northviewhigh.com.
Peer tutors are also available; please go to our
website, select clubs, then select Tutors in Action
Network. Remember: Every child can realize success
if we all work together!
Finally, encourage the student to attempt every
assignment so that he/she will be eligible for recovery.
The recovery process does not guarantee
a passing grade, but can often make the difference
between passing and failing. If the student
is spending an inordinate amount of time on a particular
class because the work is too difficult, then
set a daily time limit. Decide upon a reasonable
amount of time your child can devote each day to
the class, and stick to it. This will enable your
child to budget his/her time so that other classes
do not suffer due to fatigue or burnout, and will
help develop time management skills.

JROTC Cadets Among Nation’s Finest
Northview JROTC Cadets represented our school with honor at the George C. Marshall
JROTC Leadership Symposium in Lexington, Virginia, the home of Virginia Military Institute as
well as Washington and Lee University. Our cadets were among the 128 students selected
from over 300,000 JROTC cadets worldwide to participate in this event. Cadets Matt Nelson,
Chris Potts, Scott Barlow, and Sam Wolfson were recognized by the Marshall Foundation and
the United States Army Cadet Command as being the best of the best. Their selection placed
them in very elite company among the top 1% of all JROTC cadets, another Northview first!
In addition, members of the Titan Battalion were selected over thirty-three competing schools
to serve as the color guard for the closing ceremony. They were also privileged with the opportunity
to brief the National Director of Army JROTC on their mentorship program with State
Bridge Elementary School and their class project of developing an instructional DVD on cadet
academic portfolios.
During the symposium, students were exposed to history through guided tours, learned best
practices through peer interaction, and participated in seminars focused on leadership principles
established by George C. Marshall, the soldier, statesman and peacemaker. Students
attending the symposium received two college credit hours for attending the event, developing
presentations, and submitting reflective notes.

Hands On Northview
On Saturday, April 18, 2009, ninetythree
volunteers met at Northview
High School by the bus canopy to
sign in and give their landscaping
skills to the school for a total of 254
hours. It was amazing the way the
Hands on machine ran. TITANS
topography was added to the left
side of Abbotts Bridge Road. Other
work included spreading mulch and
pine straw, general trash pickup all
around the school with over 400
pieces of gum picked up. Special
recognition goes to outstanding parent
volunteers Tom Randall and
Relay for Life is an
event to raise awareness
and funds for cancer
research. As a team
every participant attempts
to earn $100 or
more to be on the team,
which all goes to cancer. The group has a schedule
to walk the track for 12 hours and has to keep
someone from the team on the track the entire
time. Cancer does not stop; neither can we stop
our fight.
Northview faculty and staff, fully supported by the
administration,
contributed by
buying casual
Fantastic Year for Northview’s Math Teams
The 2008 – 2009 school year has been a banner year for Northview’s math teams. This year,
With Alpharetta High School, Northview co-hosted the North Fulton Invitational Mathematics
Tournament in September. The students then hosted the first Titan Invitational Math Tournament
that was held in January. Approximately 125 students from 16 high schools participated
on that day. We are looking forward to hosting again next year.
Our Junior Varsity team placed very well in the tournaments they attended, which included a
1 st place showing at the Creekview tournament and a 2 nd place at the Georgia Tech High School
Mathematics Competition. Their season culminated with a 2 nd place showing at the Junior Varsity
State Tournament held in March.
Northview’s Varsity team performed extremely well this year, winning 1 st place at tournaments
held at Cobb County, Creekview and Greater Atlanta Christian School. There were also several
2 nd place finishes, including the University of Georgia tournament and the Rockdale County
tournament. Their season ended with a 2 nd place finish at the Georgia Council of Teachers of
Mathematics State Tournament held in April.
Northview was also very well represented through individual competitions held throughout the
year. Based on scores from the American Mathematics Competition, 13 students were selected
to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Two students, Sitan Chen and
Benjamin Hu, were selected to take the qualifying test for the United States Mathematics
Olympiad. Sitan and Benjamin were 2 of 11 students in the state of Georgia chosen to participate.
Also, through two rounds of the Kennesaw State University Mathematics Competition,
Northview students had 7 of the top 35 scores in the state.
Video Broadcast Production Program
The Northview High School Broadcast/Video Production program has completed another
successful year of media festival competition. The following students have projects moving
Congratulations to many world language students
from Northview High School who
attained national recognition for excellent
performance on the 2009 National Spanish Ex-
aminations.
Students from Northview High School earned a total of 57
gold, 74 silver and 48 bronze medals along with 70 honorable
mentions.“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student
on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,”
said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the
Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the
United States with well over 115,000 students participating in
2009.”
Students from Northview High School have a long history of
high achievement on these exams and participating students
were taught by Spanish teachers Carrie Gutierrez, Zandra
Horton, Susan Johnson, Patricia Rodriguez and Estela Valenciano.
The Northview JCL is finishing up the 2008-
2009 year with many awards and accolades. The
most recent and largest event was the state convention
held at Rock Eagle. Over 1000 Latin Students representing
different schools attended this convention in order to compete
in various sports, arts, and tests.
Northview was very successful in the oh-so-famous chariot
races. The NHS JCL was first in the boys and girls chariot run.
While some consider this a miraculous run, others see it as a
form of redemption. At last year’s state convention, the JCL
not only failed to win a title, but took a few casualties along the
way. A new chariot and a new year brought victory and glory,
but lacked the running over of a student.
The NHS JCL brought home many academic awards in tests
regarding subjects from Roman history to Greek derivatives.
The list of academic awards was seemingly endless which
reflects the fact that Northview continues to be a powerhouse
in academics. The Northview JCL made history this past convention
in the competition of Certamen or Latin quiz bowl. Our
Novice team achieved 3rd in their division, while the Lower
and Upper teams achieved 1st in their respective divisions.
The current Upper level team has won three straight
state titles, a feat that no other team has ever accomplished
before.
Northview had two students running for an office in the Georgia
Junior Classical League. We are proud to announce that
Arun Kumar and Parth Sehgal were successful in bids for
President and Vice President respectively. We wish them a
great term and hope that they will continue to bring honor to
Northview.
Twenty students from Northview will be attending this year’s
national convention at the University of California Davis this
summer. Though we will officially be representing Georgia, we
hope to bring many awards back to Northview.

Don’t
have a
cow – buy
one!
Looking for a
way to encourage
their students
to speak
more French in class, French teachers
Catherine Francisse, Roya Schweinbeck
and Valerie White put their heads together
and came up with a creative solution - a
cow! Instead of nagging and ranting at students
(commonly known as “having a
cow”), the three French teachers invented
an a-moo-zing way of persuading students
to stay in the target language. Students
who speak English in class get a toy cow
on the desk and have to perform a short
penalty at the end of class. Juniors Kaylee
Goss and Jessica McRoberts ruminated
and decided to milk this class actvitity,
turning it into a fundraiser for Oxfam.
With help from the Chick-Fil-A, French
classes held a competition fundraiser and
raised over $200 for an Oxfam project to
buy animals for Africa. Winning classes get
a Chick-Fil-A tray, and the money collected
will be used to buy animals for an African
village. One cow costs $75, so enough
money was raised to buy two cows and a
goat. So no kidding when we say that
once again, Northview French students are
la crème de la crème!
Ha Lim Yue, a Northview
senior competed at the 4th
"Chinese Bridge" US High
School Chinese Speech Contest on
April 17, 2009. She won the third place
in the special group. The contestants came
from 21 states this year. The final contest
was held at the University of Massachusetts
Confucius Institute in Boston. The contest
aims to give students an opportunity to
demonstrate their skills in speaking Chinese
language. Each student presented an individual
speech and answered the questions
in Chinese, then were judged by a panel of
Chinese language teachers and language
experts. Congratulations to Ha Lim Yue
and Northview’s newly established Chinese
Program.
