2.2.5 General installation instructions
To ensure the correct functioning and
product life of the pump, the installation
specifi cations of the engine manufacturer
must defi nitely be observed
when a new pump is being installed.
The following, general installation
instructions, however, must always
be adhered to:
• Drain the used oil and check for
potential impurities. Especially
metallic impurities often indicate
mechanical wear on individual
engine components.
• Whenever a pump is to be
installed, cleanliness is essential.
The oil intake pipe is usually
supplied with only a coarse
strainer. After a repair, dirt and
metal particles remaining in the
engine could easily reach the
interior of the new pump which
would again be worn within a
short period of time.
Therefore, all components and
ducts connected with the oil, as
well as the oil intake pipe, should
be cleaned if possible.
• Whenever a new oil pump is
installed, the oil fi lter must
always be changed as well. If the
oil pressure system is heavily
soiled, it must also be cleaned.
• Before a new pump is installed, it
must be compared to the dimensions
of the old pump.
• The pump drive train (gearing,
keyed joints, sprockets and drive
chains/belts) must be checked
for possible damage.
• Before the pump is installed, all
moveable parts of the pump (gear
wheels, shafts) must be lubricated
using the prescribed engine oil.
• During installation, make sure that
the pump fi ts well in its place. If
there are problems in the installation
(fastening problems, angle
position) the pump must not be
screwed to the housing by force.
This could cause damage to the
pump, malfunctions and leaks.
• Whenever the oil pump and the
oil intake pipe are to be installed,
new gaskets and sealing rings must
always be used. The general use
of liquid sealants should be
avoided. These should only be
used where intended by the
engine manufacturer.
BASICS
• During installation, only the torque
specifi ed the engine manufacturer
should be used to tighten the fi xings
screws for the pump.
• If liquid screw adhesives or
mechanical screw locking devices
are intended, they must be used
in accordance with the engine
manufacturer’s specifi cations.
• Prior to restarting the engine, we
recommend fi lling the oil system
with a separate pressure tank
(pressure application process). In
the process, the pressure side of
the oil system will be fi lled
complet ely with oil and vented.
Usually the system is fi lled until
the oil reaches the engine lubrication
points that are the highest
and the farthest away from the oil
pump. In the process, the oil
should escape at the rocker arms
or camshaft bearing positions.
This will prevent damage that
could be caused by insuffi cient oil
pressure when the engine is
being started.
• After “applying pressure“ to the
oil system, the engine will be
fi lled to the specifi ed oil level.
• When the engine is being started
for the fi rst time after the pump
has been replaced, the engine
will build up oil pressure in a few
seconds. If no oil pressure is generated,
the start-up procedure
must be stopped or the engine
shut off to remedy the cause of
this fault. Revving-up the engine
to accelerate oil pressure buildup
must be avoided in any case.
• Use only the oils prescribed and
authorised by the engine manufacturer.
• Service the engine according to
the manufacturer‘s specifi cations.
