2.1.5 Important Note
Proper maintenance of the cooling
system is essential for the proper
functioning of the engine. When
installing a new KS water pump one
should ensure that other components
which are important for the cooling
circuit such as drive belts, tension-
2.1.6 Damage
Symptom Possible cause Remedy
Condensate around leakage bore Permissible leakage Shaft seal has a running-in period of
1–3 hours
Coolant leaks out via leakage bore Corrosion in cooling system, due to the
use of water without coolant additive
Corrosion on rotor bearing surface Shaft seal damaged chemically by
contaminated coolant
Pitting corrosion/cavitation on rotor,
casing or shaft
Lateral guidance detached from drive
wheel (thrust washers)
Temperature too high; overaged or
wrong coolant
Incorrect alignment of timing belt,
incorrect mounting of guide pulleys and
belt tensioner
Corrosion throughout cooling system Defective cylinder head gasket, wrong/
used up coolant
Water leaks from hose connection piece
and housing seal
Tooth profi le of drive wheel worn, rubber
on timing belt abraded
ing rollers, thermostat, hoses and
clamps be inspected and exchanged
as necessary.
The cooling system must not be ope rated
with pure water. The coolant prescribed
by the vehicle manufacturer
contains anti-corrosive inhibitors and
Failure to use seal included in delivery,
improper use of sealing agent
Clean cooling system, add coolant
Clean cooling system, add coolant
Exchange coolant as prescribed,
check operating temperatures of
cooling system (check cooler,
thermostat, fan)
Correct alignment or replace drive belt
Replace cylinder head gasket,
clean cooling system
Always install seal, use sealing agent
as specifi ed
Tension of timing belt too high Replace timing belt and adjust in
accordance with manufacturer‘s
specifi cations
Fatigue fracture of water pump bearing Vibration and unbalance due to
damaged fan coupling or tensioning
rollers, tension of timing belt too high
26
prevents damage to the water pump
and other parts of the cooling circuit.
Diff erent coolants must not be mixed
with each other. Coolants of inferior
quality can cause damage and render
the whole system inoperative.
Replace water pump and defective
components
