2.1.3 Types of Construction
The design of water pumps may vary
widely and hence also their appearance.
The construction of the housing
and the type of drive are the
most conspicuous diff erentiating
features:
Type of Drive
The water pump is driven by the
engine through a belt . This is either
achieved through the timing belt of
the camshaft control or through the
Timing belt drive V-belt drive
Housing Design
Water pumps may be of open or
clo sed design.
In the case of open pumps, the
engine possesses a fl ange-mounting
V-belt and/or poly-rib belt from the
crankshaft. If the pulley is not part
of the pump, it has to be bolted to
the fl ange of the driving shaft.
