Necklace prize during the International Folklore<br />

Festival in Dijon, France.<br />

The County Museum complex, in Bistrita municipality<br />

at Grigore Balan Street no.19, has the following<br />

departments:<br />

- history<br />

- archaeology<br />

- ethnography – folk art<br />

- geology – natural sciences<br />

The county library, situated in Bistrita, Garii street<br />

no.2, was inaugurated on 1 December 1950, with an<br />

original number <strong>of</strong> 2,340 volumes, in the current<br />

municipal culture house. It currently has 195,385<br />

volumes and 11,<strong>21</strong>6 active readers.<br />

A “Concert Society” is active in the municipality; it is a<br />

managerial foundation lead by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Gavril<br />

Tarmure that complements the range <strong>of</strong> cultural<br />

activities with specific per<strong>for</strong>mances.<br />

Fine arts are also represented in Bistrita: the Art<br />

Gallery <strong>of</strong> the P.A.U. in the Central Square, the Art<br />

Gallery <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>for</strong> Culture at Petru Rares<br />

Square no. 1, the Art Gallery <strong>of</strong> the “George Cosbuc”<br />

Municipal Culture House at Little Square no. 1, three<br />

exhibition halls from the County Museum as well as<br />

the “Corneliu Baba” College Art Gallery.<br />

Bistrita also owns works <strong>of</strong> art representing<br />

remarkable personalities from Romania’s national<br />

history and culture: the statue <strong>of</strong> the poet Andrei<br />

Muresanu who wrote the National Anthem by the<br />

sculptor Cornel Medrea; the statue <strong>of</strong> the poet George<br />

Cosbuc located at the entrance to the municipal park,<br />

by sculptor G. Covalschi; the statue <strong>of</strong> the writer Liviu<br />

Rebreanu in Unirii Square, sculpted by Ladia; the<br />

statue <strong>of</strong> the poet George Cosbuc located within the<br />

precincts <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>for</strong> Culture, sculpted by G.<br />

Parvan; the bust <strong>of</strong> hospodar Al. I. Cuza, situated in<br />

front <strong>of</strong> the Police Inspectorate, sculpted by Mircea<br />

Mocanu; the bust <strong>of</strong> the Moldavian hospodar Petru<br />

Rares in Petru Rares Square, sculpted by Mihai<br />

Barbu; the bust <strong>of</strong> Avram Iancu, situated on Republicii<br />

Boulevard, sculpted by Mircea Mocanu; and “Capul de<br />

expresie” (the poet Ioan Alexandru) by Vasile Gordun.<br />
