II.2.2 Basic infrastructure<br />

A.) Transport infrastructure:<br />

Road<br />

Bistrita municipality is situated on national road DN<br />

17, which is also European road E 578, that connects<br />

the bordering counties <strong>of</strong> Suceava and Cluj. It<br />

connects the DN 15 A and DN 17 C, and connects<br />

Bistrita with the counties Maramures and Mures.<br />

The national roads DN 17, DN 17A, DN 17C, DN 17D<br />

<strong>for</strong>m the basic network that connects Bistrita<br />

municipality with all the <strong>local</strong>ities <strong>of</strong> the county.<br />

The national road DN 17 crosses the <strong>local</strong>ities <strong>of</strong><br />

Viisoara and Unirea, where it is the main road, while in<br />

the actually city, the route follows the streets Libertatii,<br />

Independentei, Garii, Republicii, 1st <strong>of</strong> December and<br />

Moldovei Road. DN 17 is the main connection<br />

between Transylvania and the north <strong>of</strong> Moldavia and<br />

the only one used <strong>for</strong> heavy traffic.<br />

The network <strong>of</strong> roads between the <strong>local</strong>ities in Bistrita<br />

municipality is as follows:<br />

- DN 17 – Viişoara – Bistrita - Unirea<br />

- DJ 154 – Sărata - Bistrita (DN17)<br />

- DJ 151 – Sigmir - Bistrita (DN17)<br />

- DJ 172 B – Slătiniţa - Unirea (DN 17)<br />

- DC 8 – Ghinda - Bistrita<br />

• Road traffic in Bistrita municipality: analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> the current situation<br />

Bistrita municipality is situated in the eastern part <strong>of</strong><br />

Transylvania, close to the European road E 60 Oradea<br />

- Cluj-Tg. Mures - Brasov, which intersects the road<br />

DN 17 (E 576) and continues with E 58 Dej - Bistrita -<br />

Vatra Dornei - Suceava and the county roads 17 C<br />

(connection with Nasaud city) and 15 A (connection<br />

with Reghin city).<br />

Bistrita municipality is situated at the crossroads <strong>of</strong><br />

several important European and national roads that<br />

cross the country from east to west and connect<br />

Transylvania with northern Moldavia and from south to<br />

north connect Transylvania with Maramures.<br />

• European traffic<br />

The road junction is located on the European road<br />

E 58 at approx. 280 km from the western border.<br />

There is intense merchandise and passenger<br />

traffic from east to west, connecting Hungary and<br />

Ukraine.<br />

• National traffic<br />

The roads DN 15A and DN 17 C, <strong>of</strong> national and intercounty<br />

importance, connect the bordering counties <strong>of</strong><br />

Maramures and Mures.<br />

DN 17 (E 58) crosses the municipality’s administrative<br />

territory through the central streets <strong>of</strong> the <strong>local</strong>ities <strong>of</strong><br />

Viisoara, Bistrita and Unirea.<br />

• Local traffic<br />

Locally important connections use DN 17, Viisoara -<br />

Bistrita; Bistrita - Unirea; DJ 172B: Unirea -Slatiniţa;<br />

DJ 151 Bistrita -Sigmir; DJ 154 Bistrita -Sărata; DC 8<br />

Bistrita -Ghinda.<br />

Railway traffic<br />

Bistrita municipality is connected to the national<br />

railway network, although no railway line crosses it.<br />

The railway lines crossing Bistrita county are 15-20 km<br />

from the municipality and they connect with the entire<br />

country.<br />

Air traffic<br />

Bistrita municipality does not have an airport, the<br />

closest domestic and international airports are 120 km<br />

away – in Cluj-Napoca – and 100 km away – in Targu-<br />

Mures.<br />

• Local public transport<br />

Passenger transport in Bistrita municipality is<br />

established by Local Council Decision no. 91 from 28t<br />

May 2001 and is per<strong>for</strong>med based on the “Local public<br />

transportation <strong>for</strong> passengers through regular services<br />

Programme”, approved annually by the Local Council<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bistrita municipality.<br />

The transportation programme includes:<br />

- the nominal list <strong>of</strong> transport routes<br />

- the traffic schemes <strong>for</strong> each route<br />

- the number <strong>of</strong> vehicles necessary <strong>for</strong> the route<br />

The <strong>local</strong> transportation programme establishes a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> 10 routes to be allotted to the transport<br />

operators according to the tender organised by the<br />

mayoralty <strong>of</strong> Bistrita municipality.
