The <strong>pastoral</strong>ist FGD stressed that there is a need to be <strong>care</strong>ful when target<strong>in</strong>g beneficiaries<br />
for all <strong>in</strong>terventions. Target a person who is committed to change himself and ignore or<br />
exclude those who are not ready to change themselves. For example restock<strong>in</strong>g has often<br />
become a failure because of poor target<strong>in</strong>g of beneficiaries.<br />
Household Survey<br />
HH characteristics<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g the focus group discussion and the Key Informant <strong>in</strong>terview, further follow up<br />
was made on the <strong>pastoral</strong> <strong>drop</strong> <strong>out</strong>s at household level to underp<strong>in</strong> issues that characterize<br />
this sector of the community.<br />
From the total household respondents sampled for household level <strong>in</strong>terviews, 41 % of<br />
them were female-headed, although there were variations across wereda. Dire for <strong>in</strong>stance<br />
had half of the respondents represent<strong>in</strong>g female-headed households; whereas <strong>in</strong> Yabello over<br />
three quartets of the respondents were male-headed. The representative households came<br />
from ab<strong>out</strong> 7 different kebeles <strong>in</strong> Moyalle town, and Yabello, but <strong>in</strong> Dire all households<br />
came from Dubluke Kebele. Overall the 150 respondents were spread across four ethnic<br />
groups namely Borena, Burji, Gabra, and Guji. The Borena (54%) and Gabra (46%) ethnic<br />
groups comprised the Moyalle respondents, while <strong>in</strong> Yabello there were Burjis and Gujis<br />
represented, and Dubluke respondents were all Borena. Table 1 shows the profile of the<br />
household heads from these sample areas. The average age of the <strong>drop</strong><strong>out</strong>s was 49, and<br />
ranged between 20 and 90 years. Household sizes averaged a little over 6 persons, and some<br />
where as low as 2. Less than 13% of the male headed households had more than 1 wife.<br />
