with aggregate scores of 430.5
points.
Scores of 420.5 points and
higher advanced to the Semi-finals
— an average of 210 points per
round.
Gail Hooper, the high-scoring
rider from both go-rounds, with
218.5 on Tummys Little Gun in the
first go-round, lost a cow in the
second go-round on Friday. She
was in good company. In the last
three sets on Saturday, alone, 26
riders lost cows.
Dan Hansen, Weatherford, TX,
was Saturday’s high-scoring rider
with 216 points on Zacks Tiana
Doc, by Zack T Wood.
Hansen, who leads in three
divisions of 2007 NCHA World
Championship competition,
including the Non-Pro, drew third
to work in the fourth set.
“The second cow that we cut
was probably the pick of the herd,”
said Hansen. “It was really good.
“He was a little bit tentative

“Hauling hashelped me become
more comfortable in the herd, in cutting,
and with being a little more patient
making my cuts” said Hansen.
“A lot of times, at the weekend cuttings,
the cattle are pretty tough and you
have to become knowledgable and not
necessarily get locked in on one of your
picks.
“I think that’s helped me more than
anything,” he added. “I probably rode
to the herd 300 to 400 times this year.
Riding to the herd that often, even a guy
as hard-headed as me learns something,
once in a while. A lot of times you have a
little more time up there than you really
think, before you have to make a definite
commitment.
“That’s probably the biggest thing
that I could single out that’s helped me
this year from hauling for the World
— just being able to be more patient and
let things develop.”
Lach Perks, who won the 2000
NCHA Non-Pro Futurity on Stella Starlight,
scored 214 points yesterday, and
an aggregate of 428 points, on Stella
Starlight’s daughter Catrina Starlight, by
High Brow Cat.
“She’s smart like her mom,” said
Perks of Catrina Starlight. “She doesn’t
get tricked by a cow and she has that
extra ‘freeze’ and radar on a cow.”
First-time NCHA Futurity competitor
Philip Layne, 17, came through with a
214.5-point score yesterday on Dual Ya
Scoot, to place him among the aggregate
leaders with 430 points. Payne
purchased Dual Ya Scoot from former
NCHA Non-Pro Futurity champion Chad
Bushaw.
