<strong>in</strong>iquity, ra<strong>the</strong>r than seek<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d a specific mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> each one. 117 Now <strong>the</strong> focus moves<br />

to <strong>the</strong> present celebration. There still are arguments as to whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> celebration alludes to<br />

<strong>the</strong> messianic banquet, given <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> forgiveness and salvation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r’s<br />

proclamation <strong>in</strong> v. 24, <strong>the</strong> imagery may well convey <strong>the</strong> messianic banquet. 118<br />

The fa<strong>the</strong>r’s declaration <strong>in</strong> v. 24 is naturally associated with <strong>the</strong> proclamations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

two <strong>parables</strong>, juxtapos<strong>in</strong>g ‘dead’ and ‘alive aga<strong>in</strong>’ with ‘lost’ and ‘found’. The repeat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same declaration <strong>in</strong> v32 still more reveals that <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r’s rationale for this celebration lies <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> younger son’s safe return. As for <strong>the</strong> word , <strong>the</strong>re are several suggestions, such as<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g morally dead’, cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> family, be<strong>in</strong>g dead to his fa<strong>the</strong>r’s love , and<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g totally dead (physically, psychologically and spiritually). 122<br />

The third scene <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parable shifts from <strong>the</strong> celebration to <strong>the</strong> field, where <strong>the</strong> elder son<br />

is return<strong>in</strong>g from his work. When he draws near to <strong>the</strong> house, he hears music and danc<strong>in</strong>g, so<br />

he asks a servant what is happen<strong>in</strong>g. Although it is quite strange that <strong>the</strong> elder son did not<br />

<strong>in</strong>stantly hear <strong>the</strong> news, <strong>the</strong> story cont<strong>in</strong>ues to flow. The servant <strong>the</strong>n reports repeatedly and<br />

briefly that ‘your bro<strong>the</strong>r has come, and your fa<strong>the</strong>r has killed <strong>the</strong> fatted calf, because he has<br />

received him safe and sound’. In <strong>the</strong> servant’s report, <strong>the</strong>re seems to be an <strong>in</strong>tention to<br />

emphasize <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r’s extravagant actions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fatted calf,<br />

<strong>in</strong> and jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebration. Incorrect is here such speculation that <strong>the</strong> elder son is angry<br />

because his bro<strong>the</strong>r may be supported once aga<strong>in</strong> by <strong>the</strong> family estate, 124<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

vv. 29-30, his resentment is entirely toward his fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The fa<strong>the</strong>r, as he did with his younger son, goes out and pleads with <strong>the</strong> elder son to come<br />

<strong>in</strong>side and jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebration. But <strong>the</strong> elder son answers his fa<strong>the</strong>r: ‘Look! For so many<br />
