Even though writing a dissertation may often feel like a solitary endeavor, many have made
this journey possible. I am deeply indebted to many of my family, friends and churches for
support, encouragement, and insight during the composition of this thesis over the last three
and a half years. I can only mention some of the most important of those here.

sustained me throughout my time of research at the University of Free State, and whose
advice and counsel made me pursue academic study of the New Testament. I cannot forget all
