<strong>the</strong> church through <strong>the</strong> activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> witnesses. Moreover, <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uity between <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Jesus and <strong>the</strong> witness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church can be seen <strong>in</strong> various common <strong>the</strong>mes:<br />

“Teach<strong>in</strong>g about salvation, Christology, eschatology and mission.” 21<br />

With legitimation and apologetic as <strong>the</strong> genre <strong>of</strong> Luke’s writ<strong>in</strong>g, and salvation as <strong>the</strong><br />

narrative unity <strong>of</strong> Luke-Acts, J.B. Green suggests that <strong>the</strong> <strong>purpose</strong> <strong>of</strong> Luke-Acts is to<br />

re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> Christian movement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> opposition. That is, by ground<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m firmly<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terpretation and experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> redemptive <strong>purpose</strong> and faithfulness <strong>of</strong> God, and<br />

22<br />

by call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to rema<strong>in</strong> constantly faithful witnesses <strong>in</strong> God’s salvific plan. In his view,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>purpose</strong> <strong>of</strong> Luke-Acts is concerned with <strong>the</strong> practices that represent <strong>the</strong> standard for<br />

legitimat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> God’s people, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vitation to participate <strong>in</strong> God’s design.<br />

In this regard, it can be said that <strong>the</strong> <strong>purpose</strong> <strong>of</strong> Luke-Acts is chiefly ecclesiological. Luke<br />

manifests, Green claims, <strong>the</strong> overall <strong>purpose</strong> <strong>of</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> church with<strong>in</strong> “salvation”<br />

as <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> Luke-Acts. Luke stra<strong>in</strong>s to answer <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian community by show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> coherence between God’s ancient plan and <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jesus. That is to say, <strong>the</strong> advent <strong>of</strong> Jesus is grounded on <strong>the</strong> ancient covenant, and still<br />

more his mission is fully <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with God’s agenda. For Luke <strong>the</strong> call to discipleship aligns<br />

and conforms itself to <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Jesus and God’s <strong>in</strong>tent. To put it differently, <strong>the</strong>y must<br />

embody <strong>the</strong> beneficence <strong>of</strong> God especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives, and express <strong>the</strong>ir mercy, <strong>in</strong> particular,<br />

toward those <strong>in</strong> need. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e <strong>purpose</strong> at times surfaces <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrative<br />

<strong>in</strong> several ways, such as dur<strong>in</strong>g Jesus’ baptism, “by means <strong>of</strong> heavenly messengers, through a<br />

constellation <strong>of</strong> <strong>terms</strong> expressive <strong>of</strong> God’s design, and through <strong>in</strong>stances <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e<br />

choreography <strong>of</strong> events.” 23 The Holy Spirit powerfully puts <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e plan <strong>in</strong>to practice.<br />

Moreover, Jesus is identified as Savior <strong>in</strong> his miracles <strong>of</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g and table fellowship. All<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs considered, throughout <strong>the</strong> Lukan writ<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong> narrative centers on salvation which<br />

“embraces life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present, restor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> human life, revitaliz<strong>in</strong>g human<br />

communities, sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cosmos <strong>in</strong> order, and commission<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> God’s<br />

people to put God’s grace <strong>in</strong>to practice among <strong>the</strong>mselves and toward ever-widen<strong>in</strong>g circles<br />

<strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.” 24<br />
