Josephus, <strong>the</strong> NT and rabb<strong>in</strong>ic literature, 20 Pharisees believed “<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e<br />

activity on human life, <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t effect <strong>of</strong> human freedom and fate, and reward and<br />

punishment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afterlife” 21<br />

on <strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong> eschatology, div<strong>in</strong>e providence and human<br />

responsibility, <strong>in</strong> which case <strong>the</strong>ir po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view was not only quite at odds with traditional<br />

Jewish teach<strong>in</strong>gs and attitudes, but also quite different from it. They <strong>in</strong>deed showed a vastly<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> tith<strong>in</strong>g, ritual purity, and Sabbath observance, hav<strong>in</strong>g less <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> civil laws and<br />

ritual regulations for <strong>the</strong> Temple worship. Pharisees also had dist<strong>in</strong>ctive <strong>in</strong>terpretations<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se matters and tried to facilitate <strong>the</strong>ir observance and substantiate its validity<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st challenges by o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong> society, and even sought to reform groups,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> priests, Qumran community, and Jesus and his early followers.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> very least it seems clear that Luke <strong>in</strong> particular holds a less hostile attitude toward<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pharisees both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>gospel</strong> and <strong>in</strong> Acts than Mark and Mat<strong>the</strong>w, although Luke’s<br />

description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pharisees raises some suspicion that he overemphasizes a positive<br />

22<br />

relationship between <strong>the</strong> Pharisees and <strong>the</strong> early followers <strong>of</strong> Jesus as <strong>the</strong>ological concerns.<br />
