contends Derrect, is that it is an anachronism, be<strong>in</strong>g derived from o<strong>the</strong>r centuries and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

cultures, lack<strong>in</strong>g evidence for <strong>the</strong> first century Judea. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, Fitzmyer contends<br />

that <strong>the</strong> steward sacrifices his own commission. 40 Marshall also feels that <strong>the</strong> commission<br />

<strong>the</strong>ory is <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with v. 9, <strong>in</strong> as much as he is us<strong>in</strong>g his own money. 41 It seems absurd,<br />

however, that <strong>the</strong> steward expects <strong>the</strong> debtors to welcome him <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir homes, hav<strong>in</strong>g taken<br />

100 per cent commission from <strong>the</strong>m. In addition, it is <strong>in</strong>deed odd that <strong>the</strong> steward’s large<br />

commission would have appeared on <strong>the</strong> bill. 42 In view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very large amounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

reductions as equivalent to about three years’ wages, it would be very strange for him to all <strong>of</strong><br />

a sudden experience a f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis. Tak<strong>in</strong>g all that <strong>in</strong>to consideration, <strong>the</strong> most proper<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g is that <strong>the</strong> steward reduced <strong>the</strong> amounts <strong>of</strong> debts which were due to his master,<br />

namely, he forged <strong>the</strong> actual amounts owed. 43<br />

form <strong>of</strong> acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> debt, <strong>in</strong>terest not be<strong>in</strong>g specified separately. Greek loans <strong>of</strong> money usually do state<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest. With regard to demotic and Greek loans <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> debtor used, particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> time<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ptolemies, to pay a compensation <strong>of</strong> 50 per cent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> goods borrowed, as <strong>in</strong>terest. This is a fixed amount<br />
