STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Jason Veltkamp<br />

has proven to be a perfect fit in Red and Black. Since<br />

Veltkamp joined the Cardinals for the 2004 season, they<br />

have be<strong>com</strong>e one of the top training programs in the<br />

nation, as witnessed by their 32-5 record during his tenure.<br />

Veltkamp’s philosophy is to make strength and conditioning<br />

a year-round priority and develop an expectation level within each<br />

athlete that ensures successful physical progression from high school<br />

to elite collegiate player. These soaring expectations have produced 14<br />

NFL draft picks over the last three years. In addition, Veltkamp’s<br />

insistence on finding balance between training hard and recovery<br />

during the season has helped the Cards to a 15-2 record since ’04<br />

down “the stretch”—November, December and January games.<br />

At the University of Louisville, the coaching staff believes<br />

that a <strong>com</strong>prehensive strength and conditioning program is the cornerstone<br />

of building a championship product on the field. Here at UofL<br />

the program is more than just strength training. Speed, agility, flexibility,<br />

position-specific conditioning, recovery/ rejuvenation and nutrition<br />

are all critical to the development of the student-athlete.<br />

Veltkamp and his staff— Shawn Griswold, Bryan Dermody & Antoine<br />

Sharp—employ a variety of state-of-the-art training methods to assist<br />

in the development speed and power, which is integral to success on<br />
