The BIG EAST Conference is one of the original founders of the Bowl Championship Series and continues to be one of only six<br />
conferences that receive an automatic annual bid.<br />
BIG EAST Conference teams have been selected to play in the traditional BCS bowl games long before the BCS ever existed. BIG<br />
EAST teams have participated in a <strong>com</strong>bined total of 24 Fiesta (8), Sugar (8), Orange (4) and Rose (4) bowls. This season marked<br />
Louisville’s first appearance in the Orange Bowl, while West Virginia appeared in its third Sugar Bowl at the conclusion of the 2005<br />
season.<br />

The BIG EAST had three top 12 teams in the final AP & USAToday Coaches Polls – Louisville (6th , 7th ), West Virginia (10th , 10th ) and<br />
Rutgers (12th , 12th )<br />
The BIG EAST is one of only three conferences (Big 10, SEC) to simultaneously have three teams ranked in the top ten during the<br />
regular season. Louisville 3rd , Rutgers 8th and West Virgina 10th were all ranked in the top ten during the week of November 12.<br />

Of the 73 games played this season involving BIG EAST teams, 29 of them were seen on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. In addition, 37<br />
others were seen on either ESPN Regional, ESPNU, ESPN360, FSN, CSTV or the NFL Network. In total, over 90% of all games<br />
involving BIG EAST teams were televised at some level.<br />
The West Virginia @ Louisville game, played on Thursday, November 2nd , was the second most watched college football game in the<br />
history of ESPN. It received a 5.33 rating and was seen by almost 5 million people.<br />
The Louisville @ Rutgers game, played on Thursday, November 9th , was the fourth most watched college football game in the history<br />
of ESPN. It received a 5.03 rating and was seen by over 4.6 million people.<br />

The BIG EAST’s regular season winning percentage in non-conference games during the 2006 season was 32-8 (.800), the highest in<br />
the 15 year history of the conference. This includes an 11-7 record against BCS Conference opponents. The <strong>com</strong>bined overall<br />
winning percentage of all BIG EAST football teams was .644, the best of any Division 1-A conference in the country. The BIG EAST<br />
went 5-0 in bowl games this past season winning the Orange (Louisville), Gator (West Virginia), Texas (Rutgers), Papa Johns.<strong>com</strong><br />
(USF) and International (Cincinnati) bowls.<br />
