During Friedman’s first six years, the Cardinal Athletic Fund continues to reach new levels of giving with increased financial support and number of donors. The Cardinal Athletic Fund has launched a "Soaring to 10K" campaign with a goal of reaching 10,000 members. Current CAF support for athletic scholarships includes over 8,500 donors giving over $10 million. Over $100 million has been raised over the last five years to support U of L athletics and construction of several new facilities, including recent completeions of Jim Patterson Baseball Stadium, Trager Center indoor facility, Ralph Wright Natatorium, Yum! Center and Koetter Center. A past president of the National Association of College Marketing Administrators (NACMA), Friedman had overseen external operations at Central Michigan since February of 1996. Friedman's efforts helped increase annual fund revenues at Central Michigan by over 60 percent in three years, despite experiencing losing football and basketball seasons. Membership in the support group increased by 50 percent over that same period. He also spearheaded a facilities campaign that surpassed its original goal by $1 million. Prior to his time at Central Michigan, Friedman worked five years at East Tennessee State, the first year as its director of marketing and promotions before advancing to assistant athletics director for external operations. There, he aided the Buccaneers in setting new revenue highs by creating new sponsorship and fund-raising programs. Born in Chicago, Friedman earned a bachelor's degree in marketing at Illinois in 1989 and a master's in athletic administration there in 1991. He began his 18 year career in athletics administration at his alma mater, serving as assistant in external operations at Illinois from 1988-91. Friedman and his wife Ra’Tonya have three dogs and are expecting their first child in September. Friedman serves on the board of the Kentucky Humane Society. Klein joined the Cardinal staff in August of 1983, after nearly two seasons as SID at Morehead State. Prior to that stint, Klein spent four years as an undergraduate and graduate assistant at Murray State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1981. Klein also worked one season as a student assistant in sports information at Austin Peay State University, and was a sports writer for the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle. Klein has coordinated the computerized statistics operation for the past 22 NCAA Final Fours. Klein, who edited U of L’s basketball history book Above the Rim, has also received other publication awards while at U of L and Murray State. He served as the media coordinator for the 1987 USA Pan American Games men's basketball team, has served on the NCAA Final Four media coordination committee and annually assists in media operations for the Kentucky Derby. He was the local media center committee chairman for the 1996 and 2000 PGA Championships in Louisville, and will serve in a similar capacity for the 2008 Ryder Cup. He assisted in the media operations at the 1999 Ryder Cup in Boston. A native of Southside, Tenn., Klein is married to the former Donna Graham. Klein has two sons: Alex, a junior at U of L, and Brady. Mitchell is the school's first Associate Athletic Director in the area of academics. He joined the U of L Athletics staff in 1999 as the Cards' Director of Academic Services after three years in a similar capacity at East Carolina. Prior to his stint there, Mitchell worked five years at his alma mater Wake Forest in many roles, including serving as assistant director of academic services for the Demon Deacons from 1994-96. A four-year letterman on the defensive line at Wake Forest (1987-91), Mitchell is an accomplished speaker and has delivered presentations at the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) national convention. He is an active member of the Black Coaches Association (BCA) and the National Consortium for Academics and Sport (NCAS). He serves on national and local boards, including 100 Black Men of America and Chestnut Street YMCA. A native of Eastville, Va. and graduate of Northampton High School, Mitchell earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in speech communications at Wake Forest in 1992 and a master's degree in education there in 1995. Moats coordinates the Cardinals’ efforts in national awareness and branding opportunities, marketing, advertising, and group ticket sales. He works closely with Nelligan Sports Marketing, which manages the exclusive marketing rights for Cardinal Athletics. Prior to joining the U of L staff, Moats served as senior associate athletic director for two years at Marquette University, where oversaw the Golden Eagles’ Blue and Gold Fund, media relations, ticket operation, special events, licensing, radio, television, marketing and promotions and sponsorships with NSM, which has the marketing rights for several BIG EAST Conference schools. Prior to his work at Marquette, he worked 14 years in the University of Kentucky athletic department, including his last three there as Associate Athletics Director for Marketing. He joined the UK staff as a graduate assistant in the athletics office in 1989 and in 1991 was promoted to Coordinator of Promotions and Special Events. He became the Wildcats’ Director of Marketing, Promotions and Licensing in 1993 before being named Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing in 1996. He served as tournament manager for the 1993 NCAA Golf Championships and the 1996 and 1998 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament events in Lexington. A native of Dixon, Ill., Moats is a 1988 graduate of Southern Illinois -Edwardsville with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He earned a master’s in Sports Management from UK in 2001. Moats and his wife Leeann have two children: Kirk and Lauren. Based at the Cardinal Park athletic training facility, she is responsible for daily sports medicine operation for 21 of U of L’s sports. Supervising seven assistant athletic trainers and one graduate assistant, Banda has travel responsibilities with women's basketball. She has coordinated sports medicine coverage for conference championships in men’s basketball, tennis, field hockey and track and field along with the NCAA Field Hockey National Championship. Banda joined U of L in 2000 as the associate director of sports medicine. She was the associate athletic trainer from 1997 to 2000 at the University of Notre Dame after spending six years as the assistant athletic trainer. As the associate, she supervised seven assistant athletic trainers, coordinated volunteer student athletic trainer program and traveled with football and women’s lacrosse. As an assistant, she worked all 26 sports with primary coverage of women’s soccer and women’s basketball. She also was a representative on the Athletic Department Diversity Committee. Prior to her stint with the Fighting Irish, she served as assistant athletic trainer at Morehead State from 1986-1991 where she had teaching responsibilities and coordinated pre-season physicals.
