Julie Hermann enters her 10th year in athletic
administration at U of L serving as senior associate
athletic director and senior woman administrator.
Hermann’s primary responsibilites are
supervising the department’s athletic teams with a
special emphasis on Olympic Sports, Sports
Medicine, Strength and Conditioning, Student
Development including Lifeskills, the Performance
Team systems and the CardsCare and CardsFIT
community outreach programs, while providing
oversight of the Olga Peers Academic unit, Development and Marketing departments.
Hermann has served on many community boards, including Metro Parks,
Women 4 Women, YMCA, the Louisville Sports Commission and currently serves
on the boards of the Frazier Rehab Institute, the Kentucky Sports Commission and
the Commission on the Status of Women. She has served on numerous conference
committees as well as the Division I NCAA Women’s Volleyball Committee,
operating as the chair.
Prior to joining the U of L staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach for USA
Volleyball, helping the National Team to a silver medal finish at the World
University Games in 1997. Before joining the National Team, Hermann served as
the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Tennessee for six seasons.
Under her watch, the Lady Vol volleyball squad improved more than 150 places in
the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the
first time in a decade.
Prior to her time at Tennessee, Hermann spent one season at Northern Arizona
where she was hired by current U of L AD Tom Jurich. Hermann earned the top post
at NAU following two seasons as an assistant at the University of Georgia where she
helped restore the Bulldogs program to national status. Georgia recorded a 70-16
mark in her two seasons and earned a spot in the Top 20.
Hermann opened her collegiate coaching career at Wyoming where she spent
two years helping the Cowgirls to the NCAA Tournament and a final eight finish.
An All-Big-Eight volleyball player at the University of Nebraska from 1981-84,
Hermann led the Huskers to four conference championships, four tournament
championships, four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of top
five finishes. She was honored as the FCA College Athlete of the Year and was an
FCA national platform speaker.

John Carns is in
his sixth year as

serving as U of L's

Compliance for five
years.
Carns is responsible for the development and
implementation of the University’s policies and
procedures in accordance with NCAA, BIG EAST
and University regulations.
Carns joined the U of L staff in August of ‘98
after nearly two years assisting in the compliance
office at the University of Miami (Fla.).
Prior to his roles in athletics, Carns worked in
government for the City of Binghamton (N.Y.). He
was a community relations assistant for the mayor’s
office (1986-88), an economic development assistant
for two years (1988-90), the Highway Safety
Program Director (1990-91) and a risk manager/
paralegal of the Office of the Corporation Counsel
(1991-93).
Carns earned a B.A. in Communications at State
University College at Oswego (N.Y.) in 1985. He
graduated with a juris doctor from the Thomas Cooley
Law School in Lansing, Mich., in 1996, the same year
he was admitted to the New York State Bar. He also
earned a master’s degree in sports administration at St.
Thomas University in Miami, Fla. in 1997.
A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Carns and his wife
Patti have two children: Lukas John and Payton Ann.

and Ticket Operations
Cautilli oversees the Cardinals' licensing, facilities
management, U of L's agreement with adidas, and the
Cardinals' ticket operations.
Prior to joining the U of L staff, Cautilli served as
assistant athletics director for business affairs and
corporate relations at Saint Louis University. He also

Kevin Miller, a veteran administrator in the Cardinal
athletics department for the past 21 years, has served
as Senior Associate Athletic Director since 2003. He
served as Associate Athletic Director for Internal
Operations for 11 years after operating six years as
assistant athletic director for business at U of L.
Miller oversees the athletic department financial and
personnel operations while also supervising football,
men’s basketball and baseball. He also oversees
facilities and equipment, game management and internal
policies and procedures. He currently serveson
the Cardinal Club Advisory Board of Directors.
Since joining the Athletic Department, Miller has helped implement the long-term
Financial Management Plan and Gender Equity Plan for the Athletic Association. He
served on two NCAA Certification Steering Committees (1996-97 and 2002-03) and
assisted in negotiating the Cards’ local media and Nelligan Sports Marketing agreements.
Miller served as the athletic department representative on U of L's NCAA self-study
steering committee. He has served as tournament manager for the 1992, 1993 and 1995
Metro Conference Tournaments; 2001 and 2003 C-USA tournaments; as well as the
First and Second Rounds of the 1991 NCAA Tournament hosted by U of L. He helped
establish the U of L Student-Athlete Advisory Board in 1994.
Miller worked 11 years in the U of L controller’s office prior to joining the athletic
department. He served in various capacities with the University Credit Union from
1977, including six years as a member of the union’s Board of Directors. Miller has also
been active with recreational sports programs on a volunteer basis in the Middletown
suburb in which he lives.
A native of Lebanon Junction, Ky., Miller earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting
from Western Kentucky University in 1973.
Miller and his wife, Betty, have two children -- son Jeremy and daughter Jennifer
Buckingham. Jennifer and husband David — both U of L graduates — have one
daughter, Riley. Jeremy and his wife Meghanne have one son, Ethan.

Director of Athletics Tom Jurich when he worked as
assistant athletics director for business operations at
Colorado State for three years (1995-98).
A 1981 graduate of Bucknell University, Cautilli
earned his master's degree in sport management in
1984 from New York University. He returned to
Bucknell in 1985 as Athletic Business Coordinator at
his alma mater. He was promoted to assistant athletic
director for business services and internal operations in
1989. He held that position until moving to a similar
position at Idaho State in 1992 before joining the
Colorado State staff. He and his wife Marla have two
children: Alli and Petey.
