2007 Season Outlook
2007 Season Outlook
plethora of depth and experience as cornerbacks
Rod Council and Bobby Buchanan and safeties Jon
Russell and Latarrius Thomas return to stabilize
this unit. Two junior-college cornerbacks Woodny
Turenne and Chaz Thompson will also be key
additions this fall.
Returning on the defense is linebacker Malik
Jackson, a second-team All-BIG EAST selection.
Jackson led the team in sacks with nine and tackles
for loss with 16. Middle linebacker Lamar Myles is
a fierce hitter and Preston Smith is a veteran at
linebacker. Furthermore, the addition of former
Miami standout Willie Williams will strengthen this
group.
Special teams will be very strong with the
return of Lou Groza Award winner Art Carmody.
The senior from Shreveport, La., booted 21-of-25
field goals and was a perfect 60-of-60 on extra
points. He has hit on 57 of 66 field goals in his
career.
Corey Goettsche and Todd Flannery will
compete at punter. Goettsche averaged 37.9 yards a
punt, while Flannery kicked at 39.7 in 2006.
JaJuan Spillman gives the Cardinals a huge
weapon in the kick return game. Spillman was one
of the nation’s best, averaging 26.5 yards a return
and returned a kick 100 yards against Rutgers.
Trent Guy took the punt return chores over during
the middle of the season and did a solid job. He
averaged a team-best 7.4 yards a return, including a
40-yard return for a score against West Virginia.
Seven of the Cardinals 12 opponents played
in bowl games a year ago and five won their postseason
contests. Also, at least two other BIG EAST
foes, West Virginia and Rutgers will be ranked in
the preseason top 15. The Cardinals have huge road
games at Kentucky, NC State, Cincinnati, West
Virginia and South Florida and have Rutgers at
home in their season-finale.
QUARTERBACKS
Senior Brian Brohm (199 of 313 for 3,049
yards, 16 TDs, 5 interceptions) enters his third
season as the Cardinals’ starter after his best
season in 2006. He was named second team
All-BIG EAST and the MVP of the
Orange Bowl. Brohm, who
has eleven 300-yard
games in his career,
owns an 18-3
record as a
starter and is
one of the
best players
in the
nation and
one of the
top
candidates
in the
Heisman Trophy
race. He was tabbed a
preseason All-American
by Playboy Magazine and
has thrown for 6,751 yards
and 41 touchdowns in his stellar career. Junior
Hunter Cantwell (45 of 70 for 700 yards, 5 TDs, 2
interceptions) has plenty of experience and could
The duo of Harry Douglas (left) and Mario Urrutia (right) might be one of the best
in the nation. The two combined to catch 128 passes in 2006.
be considered one of the top backups in the nation.
He owns a 3-1 record as a starter and has played very
well in Brohm’s absence. Junior Bill Ashburn and
red-shirt freshman Tyler Wolfe are also in the mix.
Matt Simms is a highly-touted recruit and adds
m u c h more depth to this unit.
RUNNING BACKS
The Cardinals were
forced to use a running
back by committee
approach last season when
Michael Bush went down
with an injury, and it
seemed to work out very
well. They will likely take
the same approach this fall
as the Cardinals have a
stable full of talented
runners.
Louisville did lose its
leading rusher in Kolby
Smith from a year ago, but
the Cardinals have plenty
of players who have
significant game
experience.
Junior Sergio Spencer (78 yards
on 16 carries) seemed to step up in the
spring and looks to be one of the front
runners for significant playing time. He
showed an ability to run hard and seems to have
improved enough to get on the field more in 2007.
Sophomore Anthony Allen (406 yards on 96
carries) was the back used around the goal line and
capitalized for 13 touchdowns on the ground and
also caught one. Allen is a physical runner who
could be in for a big season with additional carries.
Allen ran for 406 yards, but averaged 4.2 yards a
carry. Junior Brock Bolen (296 yards on 48 carries)
was very productive last season, running for 296
yards and a pair of scores and showed an ability to
catch the ball out of the backfield. He can also play
fullback in certain situations. Junior George
Stripling (459 yards on 81 carries) rushed for 459
yards and five touchdowns last season, but needs to
step up and be the back he was in 2005 when he
rushed for 621 yards and seven touchdowns.
Freshman Victor Anderson from St. Xavier in
Louisville rushed for over 4,000 yards and 75
touchdowns in his high school career, has a ton of
ability and could see action if he’s ready physically.
Sophomore Joe Tronzo will see action at fullback.
WIDE RECEIVERS
The wide receiver position is loaded and could
be one of the best overall units in the entire country.
Not only is this unit talented, but it’s very deep.
Senior Harry Douglas ( 70 receptions for
1,265 yards) is coming off a remarkable season and
looks to be even better in 2007. Douglas, a first
team All-BIG EAST selection, led the Cardinals
with a career-best 70 receptions for a school record
1,265 yards and six scores. He caught 10 passes for
165 yards in the Orange Bowl win over Wake
Forest.
Junior Mario Urrutia (58 receptions for 973
yards) is another big-play receiver on the outside.
