2 Application<br />

These single-<strong>phase</strong> a.c. <strong>current</strong> <strong>measuring</strong><br />

<strong>relay</strong>s are available as over<strong>current</strong><br />

or over<strong>current</strong>-time <strong>relay</strong>s as well<br />

as two-stage <strong>current</strong> <strong>relay</strong> (I> and I>>).<br />

They are used for power system protection<br />

and supervision-tasks.<br />

The measurement of high <strong>current</strong><br />

shorts is possible.<br />

On the basis of their particular qualities,<br />

the substitute of electro-mechanical <strong>current</strong><br />

<strong>measuring</strong> <strong>relay</strong>s is easily realizable<br />

(e.g. EAW-device RSf 5).<br />

They are designed for non-delayed or<br />

delayed tripping of circuit breakers or<br />

contactors and for the operation of actuating<br />

and controlling elements in the<br />

event of any exceeding of the set <strong>current</strong><br />

value.<br />

Looped into secondary transformer circuits<br />

they can monitor the primary variables<br />

of any power networks on all voltage<br />

levels. Direct connection to circuits<br />

with a nominal voltage of up to 250 V is<br />

possible.<br />

The IIw 20 offers a two-stage <strong>current</strong><br />

characteristic by the integrated highset-stage.<br />

That enables an increase of<br />

selectivity with protective grading.<br />

No additional supply is needed for<br />

these <strong>measuring</strong> <strong>relay</strong>s to work; they<br />

are supplied from the <strong>measuring</strong> circuit.<br />

Operate and release times have been<br />

kept very short and their power consumption<br />

is low.<br />

Individual devices can be combined at<br />

will for multi-<strong>phase</strong> applications.<br />

For <strong>relay</strong>s used on sea-going vessels,<br />

4 Function<br />

All appliances possess a <strong>current</strong>transformer<br />

that has the task of auxiliary<br />

voltage generation as well as providing<br />

thermal and dynamic loading capacity<br />

beside the galvanic separation.<br />

Behavior of the output <strong>relay</strong><br />

Function (without consideration of a time stage)<br />

uring range.<br />

With the types IOw 10 and IOw 20 the<br />

contact of the output <strong>relay</strong> is closed with<br />

exceeding of the setting value.<br />

Same happens delayed with the over<strong>current</strong>-time<br />

<strong>relay</strong> IOw 20z. When <strong>current</strong><br />

falls below the operate value multiplied<br />

by the resetting ratio, before the<br />

adjusted time has run out, so the timestage<br />

is reset and the output <strong>relay</strong> stays<br />

off. The adjustment of the timer is done<br />

by a potentiometer.<br />

The setting of the operate value on<br />

<strong>measuring</strong> <strong>relay</strong>s IOw 20(z) and IIw 20<br />

take place by means of DIL - switches<br />

in fine gradation. The setting accuracy<br />

is high so no calibration is necessary in<br />

most cases.<br />

A red/white hand-reset drop indicator<br />

signals tripping of the <strong>relay</strong>. It is thus<br />

possible, even in the off-circuit state to<br />

determine which <strong>relay</strong> was started.<br />

Relay IOw 10, on the other hand, has a<br />

LED to signal that the output <strong>relay</strong> has<br />

responded.<br />
