RESPONSE TO RESEARCH QUESTIONS<br />

This study used a qualitative design <strong>to</strong> discover students’ perceptions and<br />

experiences about learning five communication strategies. Seven volunteers revealed<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir perceptions <strong>to</strong>ward learning and using each communication strategy in<br />

90-minute interviews after <strong>the</strong> 5th and 10th week <strong>of</strong> training. The results are<br />

presented in five sections in this chapter, according <strong>to</strong> five research questions for <strong>the</strong><br />

five communication strategies. The general open-ended question is: What do you<br />

perceive in learning this strategy?<br />

After 14 interviews <strong>of</strong> 90 minutes with seven volunteers, <strong>the</strong> in-depth<br />

discussions were coded and conceptualized in<strong>to</strong> several significant <strong>the</strong>mes associated<br />

with students' learning experiences and beliefs <strong>to</strong>ward communication strategies. The<br />

students’ feedback collected from <strong>the</strong> interviews were comparison analyzed and were<br />

described with two <strong>to</strong> four points for each communication strategy. The findings <strong>of</strong><br />

students' perceptions and attitudes were conceptualized and reported in this study,<br />

including several issues rarely discussed in previous studies that can contribute <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academic field <strong>of</strong> communication strategies and <strong>to</strong> school administra<strong>to</strong>rs who design<br />

<strong>the</strong> English communication courses.<br />

Analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Interview<br />

Through two 90-minute interviews after <strong>the</strong> 5th week and 10th week <strong>of</strong><br />

training, each volunteer described in detail his or her experiences <strong>of</strong> learning <strong>the</strong><br />

communication strategies. The interview data collected in <strong>the</strong> videotapes were<br />

transformed, transcribed, coded, and interpreted <strong>to</strong> identify students’ perceptions<br />

<strong>to</strong>ward various skills in five communication strategies. The analysis method applied<br />
