1) Participants considered <strong>the</strong>mselves as Taiwanese non-aboriginal speakers.<br />

2) Participants used Taiwanese, Hakka, or Mandarin <strong>to</strong> communicate in daily<br />

life.<br />

3) Participants agreed that <strong>the</strong>y had learned English at least for 6 years in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

junior high school and senior high school before entering Tunghai<br />

University.<br />

4) Participants agreed <strong>to</strong> sign <strong>the</strong> consent form before cooperating with <strong>the</strong><br />

trainer and <strong>the</strong> researchers <strong>to</strong> do <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> communication strategy in<br />

Spring 2006.<br />

5) Participants’ ages were 18 years old or above.<br />

6) Participants had passed <strong>the</strong> same required English basic course in Fall 2005.<br />

In Spring 2006, <strong>the</strong>y continued <strong>to</strong> take <strong>the</strong> same three-credit English course.<br />

7) Participants’ Chinese and native speaking teachers in high schools used both<br />

English and Mandarin <strong>to</strong> teach English.<br />

Seven Volunteers from Different Areas in Taiwan<br />

Among <strong>the</strong>se 24 students who passed in <strong>the</strong> first semester and cooperated<br />

with this study in <strong>the</strong> second semester, four male and three female volunteers (N=7)<br />

were interviewed. These seven volunteers were from three different departments in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Agriculture College <strong>of</strong> Tunghai University. Three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m were from <strong>the</strong> Animal<br />

Science Department, three from <strong>the</strong> Food Science Department, and one from <strong>the</strong><br />

Hospitality Management Department. These volunteers came from different districts,<br />

mainly from Yilan, Shinchu, Taichung, Changhua, and Tainan, in Taiwan, R. O. C.<br />

Individual’s English Learning Backgrounds<br />

1) Sung Ru Liu: Sung Ru started <strong>to</strong> learn English from her first year in<br />
