1) Participants considered themselves as Taiwanese non-aboriginal speakers.
2) Participants used Taiwanese, Hakka, or Mandarin to communicate in daily
life.
3) Participants agreed that they had learned English at least for 6 years in their
junior high school and senior high school before entering Tunghai
University.
4) Participants agreed to sign the consent form before cooperating with the
trainer and the researchers to do the study of communication strategy in
Spring 2006.
5) Participants’ ages were 18 years old or above.
6) Participants had passed the same required English basic course in Fall 2005.
In Spring 2006, they continued to take the same three-credit English course.
7) Participants’ Chinese and native speaking teachers in high schools used both
English and Mandarin to teach English.
Seven Volunteers from Different Areas in Taiwan
Among these 24 students who passed in the first semester and cooperated
with this study in the second semester, four male and three female volunteers (N=7)
were interviewed. These seven volunteers were from three different departments in
the Agriculture College of Tunghai University. Three of them were from the Animal
Science Department, three from the Food Science Department, and one from the
Hospitality Management Department. These volunteers came from different districts,
mainly from Yilan, Shinchu, Taichung, Changhua, and Tainan, in Taiwan, R. O. C.
