For <strong>the</strong> fifth strategy, cooperation, <strong>the</strong> seven students commented on it<br />

differently. Through referring <strong>to</strong> Figure 4.5, although all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 7 students thought it<br />

was expedient in English communication, two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m (Jiun Sheng and Ling Mei)<br />

pointed out that <strong>the</strong>y might not avail <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>of</strong> it in some situations out <strong>of</strong> class.<br />

Jiun Sheng believed he could not apply it when talking <strong>to</strong> women. Ling Mei<br />

perceived “appealing for assistance” in <strong>the</strong> “cooperation” strategy could be used only<br />

in learning situations at school, but not in competitive occupational fields. Why <strong>the</strong><br />

above 2 respondents perceived that cooperation strategy could not be applied in <strong>the</strong><br />

occupation field or <strong>to</strong> women was because <strong>the</strong>y believed it might cause <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> lose<br />

face because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> commercial principles and traditions in Taiwan. Most Taiwanese<br />

regard confident and independence are important qualities in working.<br />
