described an “A<strong>to</strong>m” as “<strong>the</strong> smallest unit in a chemical compound,” and “<strong>the</strong><br />

different metals are composed with different metal elements with different<br />

structures.”<br />

In <strong>the</strong> second interview, Tien Long eventually expressed that <strong>the</strong> “word coinage” was<br />

helpful for him, especially in <strong>the</strong> situation <strong>of</strong> introducing Taiwanese culture:<br />

“Word coinage” in interlanguage was not very helpful for me. The 2 reasons<br />

were: I worried I was not able <strong>to</strong> create a word in time, and I worried that <strong>the</strong><br />

listeners could not comprehend <strong>the</strong> word I created. For some words related <strong>to</strong><br />

Taiwanese culture, which I could not find in <strong>the</strong> dictionary such as 蚵仔麵線,<br />

I should explain it in detail without just using <strong>the</strong> created new name for it:<br />

“Oyster Noodle.” I described, “It was a kind <strong>of</strong> thin noodle cooked with<br />

oyster, vinegar, starch, and cilantro.” I thought because <strong>the</strong>re was no 蚵仔麵<br />

線 in foreign countries, so it was more appropriate that I illustrated what it<br />

was if I explained it <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> foreigners. I believed that <strong>the</strong> created word “Oyster<br />

Noodle” could be unders<strong>to</strong>od if many people used it very <strong>of</strong>ten or if it became<br />

popular one day. For example, <strong>the</strong> “Stinky To-Fu 臭豆腐,” or “Long Time<br />

No See 好久不見” had been accepted and well known <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> foreigners.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> second interview, Tien Long pointed out that he believed that a confident<br />

person would be able <strong>to</strong> apply “word coinage” more competently than those who<br />

were timid. He also expressed that <strong>the</strong> “paraphrase” made a compensation for his
