believed when I had a low pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, I should use a lot <strong>of</strong> “generalization.”<br />

It would be clearer if I used “generalization” with “paragraph.”<br />

In <strong>the</strong> second interview, Sung Ru addressed that she would work out interlanguage<br />

privately so she would not lose face:<br />

I would use interlanguage in <strong>the</strong> private circumstances instead <strong>of</strong> in <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

I did not perceive losing face if I talked <strong>to</strong> my good friends or some<br />

acquaintances with interlanguage. They knew my language and cultural<br />

background, so <strong>the</strong>y did not detect that my language was strange. However, I<br />

would avoid using <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> public where people might expect <strong>to</strong> hear more<br />

standard English.<br />

Sung Ru used her imagination <strong>to</strong> describe how she perceived interlanguage in her<br />

second interview:<br />

As <strong>to</strong> my perception about <strong>the</strong> restructuring skill in interlanguage, it was like<br />

encountering a road block on <strong>the</strong> way home, so I had <strong>to</strong> make a de<strong>to</strong>ur. It <strong>to</strong>ok<br />

more time for me <strong>to</strong> reach my destination; however, I was able <strong>to</strong> find a way<br />

<strong>to</strong> go home. The block was <strong>the</strong> challenging vocabulary and <strong>the</strong> de<strong>to</strong>ur was <strong>the</strong><br />

dialogues for explaining <strong>the</strong> difficult words.<br />

Sung Ru described how she perceived generation and “word coinage” in <strong>the</strong><br />

interlanguage interview:
