Because when we were in junior and senior high schools, we only learned <strong>to</strong><br />

read and write instead <strong>of</strong> <strong>to</strong> listen and <strong>to</strong> speak. Without many experiences <strong>of</strong><br />

speaking in English and using <strong>the</strong> learned word, I was not able <strong>to</strong> think<br />

effortlessly <strong>of</strong> many high-level vocabularies.<br />

Ling Mei expressed that she gained more opportunities in practicing learned<br />

words in English communication in Tunghai, which made her use <strong>the</strong> replacement<br />

strategy less.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first interview, Pei Pei described meaning replacement with an<br />

interesting metaphor that showed how she perceived in learning this strategy:<br />

Meaning replacement strategy was like a method <strong>of</strong> paving a road. It finally,<br />

little <strong>by</strong> little, brought us <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> destination after we tried <strong>to</strong> build <strong>the</strong> way<br />

very slowly. The method was slow, but it finally made us form our target<br />

concept in an intelligible way. I believed meaning replacement at least built a<br />

thinking direction that led me <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> target meaning, just like <strong>of</strong>fering me <strong>the</strong><br />

outlines for writing an article. It was like I was doing difficult homework. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> beginning, I was not confident whe<strong>the</strong>r I was able <strong>to</strong> do it. After trying<br />

little <strong>by</strong> little, I was able <strong>to</strong> get it done through referring <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> similar<br />

questions and closer answers.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first interview, Pei Pei perceived that this strategy was needed because it kept<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>pic going:<br />
