not think it was awful; <strong>the</strong>y unders<strong>to</strong>od my situation. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, when<br />

my question was abandoned, I would think that <strong>the</strong> partner himself does not<br />

know a deeper meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> word that I asked <strong>the</strong>m, so he did not know<br />

how <strong>to</strong> explain that word.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> second interview, Sung Ru perceived:<br />

As <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> message abandonment strategy, it was helpful for my<br />

communication. In my learning experience <strong>of</strong> “abandoning message,” when I<br />

abandoned a word, it usually was easier <strong>to</strong> continue <strong>to</strong> talk well. I perceived<br />

freedom when I shrugged <strong>of</strong>f a difficult word after I struggled <strong>to</strong> figure out<br />

how I should put in plain words for it.<br />

It was not right <strong>to</strong> take unnecessary pains <strong>to</strong> figure out an insignificant or<br />

insoluble problem during an important communication. It wasted <strong>to</strong>o much<br />

time for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, and made <strong>the</strong> communication s<strong>to</strong>p in <strong>the</strong> middle. As <strong>to</strong><br />

message abandonment, it was advantageous for my communication. When I<br />

abandoned a word, I usually was able <strong>to</strong> continue <strong>to</strong> talk better.<br />

Sung Ru addressed that <strong>the</strong> message abandonment strategy allowed her <strong>to</strong> save face<br />

when she was not able <strong>to</strong> clarify a simple word:<br />
