Tra<strong>in</strong>ee F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

9. The tra<strong>in</strong>ee receives a stipend <strong>of</strong> $6,500 per annum from <strong>the</strong><br />

Ford Foundation, which is expected to cover all liv<strong>in</strong>g expenses,<br />

tuition fees to Oberl<strong>in</strong> College, certa<strong>in</strong> domestic and foreign travel,<br />

and some personal equipment.<br />

X. ART RESTORATION CENTRE, STATE<br />

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE AT ONEONTA,<br />

COOPERSTOWN, NEW YORK STATE<br />

1. The Art Restoration Centre at Cooperstown was set up <strong>in</strong> 1970<br />

to provide a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate Programme <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> State University College at Oneonta. The first set <strong>of</strong> students<br />

entered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> autumn <strong>of</strong> 1970.<br />

2. The Centre is purpose built, provid<strong>in</strong>g conservation studios, a<br />

laboratory and photographic studios. The staff and students have<br />

access to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> library on <strong>the</strong> Cooperstown campus and funds<br />

are available to establish a small conservation library <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre.<br />

Staff<br />

3. There is a permanent staff <strong>of</strong> two conservators (both with <strong>the</strong><br />

status <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor), a science lecturer and a secretary. Visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

specialists are <strong>in</strong>vited to teach on a temporary basis.<br />

<strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Course<br />

4. The three-year course <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> historic and artistic<br />

works, ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>of</strong> American provenance, will consist <strong>of</strong> two years at<br />

Cooperstown followed by a year's <strong>in</strong>ternship <strong>in</strong> some o<strong>the</strong>r conservation<br />

studio. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first two years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong> student<br />

attends classes, and does conservation under supervision. Among<br />

<strong>the</strong> subjects taught are:<br />

Applications <strong>of</strong> Science to <strong>the</strong> Exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> Artifacts<br />

There is a high proportion <strong>of</strong> practical work.<br />
