TRAINING IN THE CONSERVATION OF PAINTINGS<br />
2. The ICA Laboratory conta<strong>in</strong>s a small library <strong>of</strong> literature relevant<br />
to conservation, and a considerable archive has been built up<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce 1952 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> objects.<br />
Staff<br />
3. There is a permanent staff <strong>of</strong> a conservator, who is Director <strong>of</strong><br />
ICA, an assistant conservator, and a secretary.<br />
<strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Course<br />
4. The ICA <strong>of</strong>fered for <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>in</strong> 1970 a three-year tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
programme <strong>in</strong> conservation. This was made possible by a grant from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Ford Foundation. The first year <strong>of</strong> this course is a qualify<strong>in</strong>g<br />
year. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> second and third years <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>ees will take part<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation programmes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICA Laboratory, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
regular visits <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection to <strong>the</strong> member museums. About half <strong>the</strong><br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ees' time will be spent on practical work. The tra<strong>in</strong>ees are expected<br />
to undertake an <strong>in</strong>dependent project ei<strong>the</strong>r at Oberl<strong>in</strong> or<br />
elsewhere dur<strong>in</strong>g January, and dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer vacation. They<br />
are also expected to participate <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars (about two a year) held<br />
at member <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />
5. The staff and students have access to <strong>the</strong> Oberl<strong>in</strong> College Art<br />
Library <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Allen Art Build<strong>in</strong>g; and all tra<strong>in</strong>ees will be encouraged<br />
to augment <strong>the</strong>ir academic studies by attend<strong>in</strong>g courses available at<br />
Oberl<strong>in</strong> College or, with <strong>the</strong> Director's approval, at o<strong>the</strong>r neighbour<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions. They may apply for enrolment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oberl<strong>in</strong><br />
College Graduate Programme, lead<strong>in</strong>g to a master's degree.<br />
Award<br />
6. On <strong>the</strong> satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>ee receives<br />
a certificate and statement <strong>of</strong> competence as a practis<strong>in</strong>g conservator<br />
from <strong>the</strong> ICA. This certificate is <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>of</strong> any academic<br />
degrees obta<strong>in</strong>ed by tra<strong>in</strong>ees.<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong>ees<br />
7. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course is restricted to three tra<strong>in</strong>ees a year, mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a total over a three year period <strong>of</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Entry Qualifications<br />
8. Individual aptitude ra<strong>the</strong>r than academic achievement is required;<br />
but <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum qualifications are <strong>in</strong>dicated as: general education<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> a B.A. degree; knowledge <strong>of</strong> art history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> level<br />
<strong>of</strong> an undergraduate major, chemistry or physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> a<br />
