Student F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
12. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is free; but travel and liv<strong>in</strong>g expenses must be<br />
found by <strong>the</strong> student. Assistance towards <strong>the</strong>se expenses is available<br />
to non-Belgian students under various cultural and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>ter-governmental<br />
agreements, from private foundations, from UNESCO,<br />
ICOM, and <strong>the</strong> Rome Centre.<br />
Vll. THE DOERNER INSTITUTE - MUNICH<br />
1. The Doerner Institute is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Alte P<strong>in</strong>ako<strong>the</strong>k, <strong>of</strong> which its Director, Dr C. Wolters, is Deputy<br />
Director. It is housed separately on an upper floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bayerisches<br />
Staatsgemaldesammlungen. The area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> restoration studios and<br />
scientific laboratories is approximately 750 square metres (8,073<br />
square feet); this does not <strong>in</strong>clude o<strong>the</strong>r workshops, <strong>of</strong>fices and <strong>the</strong><br />
library.<br />
2. The Doerner Institute is a research <strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>of</strong> conservation<br />
studies and is consulted by members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public. The ma<strong>in</strong> source<br />
<strong>of</strong> material for conservation is <strong>the</strong> Alte P<strong>in</strong>ako<strong>the</strong>k, and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
museums and galleries <strong>in</strong> Bavaria, but some work is done for private<br />
clients. The Doerner Institute specialises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> easel<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
3. Full records <strong>of</strong> every pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g which receives treatment at <strong>the</strong><br />
Institute are kept. A copy is returned with <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> gallery<br />
or client and ano<strong>the</strong>r copy is kept at <strong>the</strong> Institute. These records<br />
are available to members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> staff and bona fide scholars, but<br />
not to <strong>the</strong> general public.<br />
4. Research is carried out on <strong>the</strong> applications <strong>of</strong> physical and biological<br />
sciences to conservation and restoration, and special studies<br />
have been made <strong>of</strong> environmental problems. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are published.<br />
