Staff<br />
10. The total permanent staff is seventy-one; <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> restorers<br />
deal<strong>in</strong>g with several branches <strong>of</strong> conservation is fifteen, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal restorer, and <strong>the</strong>re are eleven technicians.<br />
There are six scientists aided by three laboratory technicians. No<br />
part-time staff are employed.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
n. ICR is f<strong>in</strong>anced by <strong>the</strong> Italian Government through <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />
<strong>of</strong> Public Instruction.<br />
Student F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
12. The tuition is free. As regards ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, some students<br />
receive scholarships from a private foundation, and several regions,<br />
Sicily and Apulia, for example, have made provision <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir programmes<br />
for giv<strong>in</strong>g scholarships to students com<strong>in</strong>g from those<br />
prov<strong>in</strong>ces.<br />
VI. THE INSTITUT ROYAL DU PATRIMOINE<br />
ARTISTIQUE - BRUSSELS<br />
1. The Institut Royal de Patrimo<strong>in</strong>e Artistique (IRPA) was set up<br />
under <strong>the</strong> Belgian M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Education and Culture <strong>in</strong> 1934 to<br />
conserve <strong>the</strong> artistic heritage <strong>of</strong> Belgium, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ownership<br />
<strong>of</strong> public museums or galleries, <strong>the</strong> church or private persons.<br />
2. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1962 <strong>the</strong> IRPA has been housed <strong>in</strong> a new build<strong>in</strong>g, which<br />
also provides accommodation for o<strong>the</strong>r national <strong>in</strong>stitutions, such<br />
as <strong>the</strong> Archaeological Excavation Service. The area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation<br />
studio is 1,100 square metres (11,840 square feet).<br />
3. In addition to <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitute undertakes<br />
that <strong>of</strong> polychrome sculpture and o<strong>the</strong>r objects on a wooden<br />
support, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r materials such as ivory or enamel, <strong>of</strong> tapestries<br />
and <strong>of</strong> archaeological antiquities. It does not restore watercolours<br />
or draw<strong>in</strong>gs, which are dealt with by <strong>the</strong> Royal Library, and<br />
rarely deals with <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> oriental works <strong>of</strong> art.<br />
4. The Institute's library, archives and photographic collections,<br />
which have been developed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> last eighteen years, are available<br />
not only to <strong>the</strong> staff and students, but also to all scholars and<br />
conservators.<br />
