<strong>in</strong> collaboration with Rome University with<strong>in</strong> special programmes<br />
agreed with <strong>the</strong> National Council for Research; more recently a<br />
programme <strong>of</strong> research has been launched with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
' Laboratori Studi e Ricerche' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Snam Progetti (ENI).<br />
<strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Course<br />
4. ICR <strong>of</strong>fers a three-year course <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
with an optional fourth year <strong>of</strong> advanced study. The course is not<br />
divided <strong>in</strong>to separate elementary or advanced sections. About twothirds<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course is practical work and carried out at <strong>the</strong> ICR,<br />
or as is necessary with mural pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, on site.<br />
The students receive formal <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> classes. Among <strong>the</strong><br />
subjects are:<br />
Microbiology<br />
Physics<br />
Theory <strong>in</strong> techniques <strong>of</strong> restoration<br />
Art history<br />
Draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />
5. Students also work dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer vacations on projects<br />
undertaken by <strong>the</strong> ICR. In 1970, for example, at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vitation <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> National Gallery <strong>in</strong> Dubl<strong>in</strong>, a group <strong>of</strong> students supervised by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Head Restorer, visited <strong>the</strong> Gallery to work with <strong>the</strong> Gallery<br />
staff on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation and conservation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection.<br />
Award<br />
6. The course leads to a diploma <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitute and <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />
students qualify<strong>in</strong>g each year varies up to <strong>the</strong> maximum <strong>of</strong> fourteen.<br />
Students<br />
7. The maximum annual <strong>in</strong>take for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Course is ten<br />
Italians and five foreigners.<br />
8. In addition to students tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Course, a<br />
vary<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> foreigners visit <strong>the</strong> ICR for short refresher<br />
courses for <strong>the</strong> advanced year only, or for <strong>the</strong> short course on mural<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs run <strong>in</strong> conjunction with <strong>the</strong> Rome Centre (see IV above).<br />
Qualifications<br />
9. The m<strong>in</strong>imum entry qualification for <strong>the</strong> three-year course is <strong>the</strong><br />
diploma <strong>of</strong> 'Scuola Media Inferiore'. The average age <strong>of</strong> entry is<br />
eighteen.
