8. Tuition is free. The Rome Centre provides some scholarships;<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise ma<strong>in</strong>tenance is at <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student or his employer.<br />

V. THE ISTITUTO CENTRALE DEL RESTAURO -<br />

ROME<br />

1. The Istituto Centrale del Restauro (ICR) is adm<strong>in</strong>istratively dependent<br />

on <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Public Instruction, Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Antiquities and F<strong>in</strong>e Arts. It is housed separately <strong>in</strong> a large Roman<br />

palace and <strong>the</strong> total area is approximately 3,473 square metres<br />

(37,386 square feet).<br />

2. ICR is a conservation centre and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is one <strong>of</strong> its activities.<br />

Material for restoration comes from public and private bodies. In<br />

so far as <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> art are subject to <strong>the</strong> laws for <strong>the</strong> protection<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artistic heritage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Italian nation <strong>the</strong>ir conservation is a<br />

state responsibility. The restoration <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs is ICR's ma<strong>in</strong> concern,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> conservation is undertaken <strong>of</strong> bronze, wood, stone and<br />

marble sculpture, ceramics, mosaics and terracotta.<br />

3. Records are kept <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> objects treated, with photographic<br />

documentation, which are available to all bona fide enquirers. Research<br />

is carried out on <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> physical and biological<br />

sciences to conservation and restoration. The work done on environmental<br />

control is <strong>the</strong>oretical only. This work is done ma<strong>in</strong>ly
