TRAINING IN THE CONSERVATION OF PAINTINGS<br />
loma. Those who <strong>in</strong>tend to become pr<strong>of</strong>essional restorers are, however,<br />
expected to proceed to some years' fur<strong>the</strong>r work at an advanced<br />
course such as that <strong>of</strong> Stuttgart, or to work under supervision <strong>in</strong> a<br />
studio, before <strong>the</strong>ir tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g could be considered complete.<br />
Students<br />
8. Present accommodation is sufficient for a total <strong>of</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e students,<br />
i.e. four or five a year.<br />
9. The m<strong>in</strong>imum age <strong>of</strong> entry is eighteen, but older students, especially<br />
graduates, who form 50% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> applicants, are preferred.<br />
Qualify<strong>in</strong>g experience<br />
10. The m<strong>in</strong>imum academic qualifications for this course are five<br />
'O' levels, one <strong>of</strong> which must be <strong>in</strong> chemistry or physics; <strong>in</strong> practice<br />
students have had 'A' levels or university degrees.<br />
Staff<br />
11. The permanent staff is one lecturer and one assistant lecturer.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
12. The <strong>Conservation</strong> Department <strong>in</strong> Gateshead Technical College<br />
is adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> Technical College and all expenditure is met<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Technical College. Charges to cover time and materials are<br />
made to clients for restoration work.<br />
Student F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
13. The students, who come from all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, are supported<br />
by local authority ma<strong>in</strong>tenance grants or by private means.<br />
III. INSTITUTO CENTRAL DE CONSERVACION<br />
Y RESTAURACION DE OBRAS DE ARTS -<br />
MADRID<br />
i. The Institute was founded <strong>in</strong> 1961 to deal with <strong>the</strong> conservation<br />
<strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and o<strong>the</strong>r objects <strong>in</strong> churches and <strong>in</strong> museums which<br />
have no conservation facilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own. The material comes<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ly from churches, whe<strong>the</strong>r pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, frescoes, or polychrome<br />
sculpture.<br />
