TRAINING IN THE CONSERVATION OF PAINTINGS<br />

Students<br />

13. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course is restricted to two students a year, mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a total <strong>of</strong> four <strong>in</strong> all, plus two students at a time work<strong>in</strong>g on research<br />

projects.<br />

Entry Qualifications<br />

14. Students must be graduates or <strong>the</strong> equivalent (e.g. Dip. A.D.) <strong>in</strong><br />

art, art history or <strong>the</strong> natural sciences. The average age <strong>of</strong> entry is<br />

21/22.<br />

Staff<br />

15. The permanent staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Department (with <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong> Reader), one assistant for conservation,<br />

one technician for photography and radiography, and one<br />

secretary.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

16. The Technology Department is supported by a share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Courtauld Institute's share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Government's funds allocated to<br />

London University by <strong>the</strong> University Grants Committee, and from<br />

tuition fees (£60 per annum).<br />

Student F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

17. The students are supported by local education authority ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />

grants, State Bursaries awarded by <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education<br />

and Science or by private means. There is one Courtauld<br />

Institute Studentship <strong>of</strong> £800 per annum.<br />

II. GATESHEAD TECHNICAL COLLEGE - THE<br />

CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT<br />

i. The <strong>Conservation</strong> Department now at Gateshead Technical College<br />

derives from <strong>the</strong> conservation department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shipley Art<br />

Gallery which was set up <strong>in</strong> 1950. In 1967 <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> this conservation<br />

department started a two-year course <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, but <strong>the</strong>re was not accommodation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shipley<br />

Art Gallery for more than three students at a time. Moreover, <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Education would not recognise <strong>the</strong> Gallery as an<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r education, and <strong>the</strong> students were <strong>the</strong>refore not<br />

able to obta<strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance grants from <strong>the</strong> local education authorities.<br />

To overcome <strong>the</strong>se difficulties <strong>the</strong> Shipley Art Gallery negotiated<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Technical College to set up <strong>the</strong> present course.<br />
