courses visited by <strong>the</strong> committee<br />
I. THE COURTAULD INSTITUTE OF ART,<br />
LONDON - TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT<br />
1. The Courtauld Institute <strong>of</strong> Art, an Institute <strong>of</strong> London University,<br />
provides undergraduates and post-graduate courses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> history<br />
<strong>of</strong> art, which lead to London University degrees.<br />
2. The Institute is at present entirely situated <strong>in</strong> Home House, 20<br />
Portman Square, except for its exhibition galleries and <strong>the</strong> greater<br />
part <strong>of</strong>its collections <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, draw<strong>in</strong>gs and o<strong>the</strong>r works <strong>of</strong> art,<br />
which are at Woburn Square, <strong>in</strong> a build<strong>in</strong>g shared with <strong>the</strong> Warburg<br />
Institute. The plans for complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Woburn Square<br />
provide for hous<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole Institute <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
3. The Institute's art and photographic libraries are available to<br />
students; its galleries are open to <strong>the</strong> public and works <strong>of</strong> art not<br />
displayed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> galleries are available to students.<br />
Technology Department<br />
4. The Technology Department, for <strong>the</strong> conservation and scientific<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> works <strong>of</strong> art, was founded <strong>in</strong> 1933 and has carried<br />
out work for public and private collections s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n. Works <strong>of</strong><br />
art for restoration come from <strong>the</strong> Institute itself, from <strong>the</strong> National<br />
Trust, <strong>the</strong> Royal Collection, local museums and private collectors.<br />
These are ma<strong>in</strong>ly, but not exclusively, pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs and draw<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
5. The department has recently been extended and at present covers<br />
about 2,000 square feet at nos. 9 and 10 Portman Close, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mews<br />
beh<strong>in</strong>d no. 20 Portman Square.<br />
6. Records are kept <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> importance and research<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest which pass through <strong>the</strong> Technology Department. Access is<br />
given to all bonafide enquirers.<br />
