CLINICAL CARDIOVASCULAR PHYSIOLOGY<br />

Elective course for medical students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years.<br />

The purposes of the course are:<br />

To refresh and extend – in selected topics – the basic knowledge related to normal and<br />

pathological functions of the human circulatory system<br />

To integrate the latest scientific results related to different organization levels – from molecular<br />

physiology to system physiology – of the cardiovascular system.<br />

To discuss and demonstrate measurement principles and techniques, as well as physiological and<br />

pathophysiological mechanisms related to the application of modern non-invasive cardiovascular<br />

diagnostic procedures in the clinical practice.<br />

Program:<br />

1. Biomechanical background of normal and pathological cardiovascular functions.<br />

2. Hemodynamics of cerebral aneurisms<br />

3. Recent results in control of cerebral blood supply, physiological and clinical aspects<br />

4. Clinical physiology of the microcirculation<br />

5. Age related changes in the vascular system, role of sexual hormons<br />

6. Coronary circulation, possibilities of pharmaco-physiological interventions<br />

7. Pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency<br />

8. Role of endothelial mechanisms in clinical symptoms<br />

9. Duplex ultrasonic investigation of large vessel function: measurement of vessel wall<br />

elasticity, Doppler-indexes, study of veins<br />

10. Ultrasonic investigation of the human heart: theoretical background; 2D-, M-,<br />

Doppler-mode, color Doppler imaging, echocardiography; diagnostics of valve<br />

insufficiency and coronary diseases<br />

Students who meet the following criteria will receive 2 credit points: regular attendance of classes<br />

and successful written exam. Material for the exam includes lecture topics and textbooks<br />

suggested by the lecturers.<br />
