OPHTHALMOLOGY<br />

First Semester<br />

Practice:<br />

Anatomy of the eye and adnexa. Dissection of a pig’s eye.<br />

General notions on the examination of an eye patient.<br />

The normal ophthalmological status.<br />

Functions of the eye. Determination of visual acuity (distant, near). Refractive errors of the eye.<br />

Retinoscopy.<br />

Correction of visual refractive errors. Prescription of glasses. Javal-Schiötz ophthalmometer.<br />

Corneal topography. Contact lenses. Photorefractive keratectomy.<br />

Visual field, colour vision, examination of dark adaptation, critical flicker fusion frequency.<br />

Tonometry.<br />

External examination of the eye (diffuse light, focal illumination, slit lamp), exposing the palpebral<br />

fissure, eversion of the eyelids. Differential diagnosis of the red eye.<br />

Ophthalmoscopy I.<br />

Red reflex. Direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Examination of the pupil.<br />

Ophthalmoscopy II.<br />

Fluorescein angiography. Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.<br />

Surgical management of cataract. Ultrasound biometry. Planning of the refractive power of IOL.<br />

One - day surgery.<br />

The glaucoma patient, screening and follow-up. Antiglaucomatous interventions.<br />

Surgery of the vitreous body.<br />

Ophthalmoscopy III. Pediatric ophthalmology. The examination of concomitant squint and its<br />

treatment. Binocular vision. Differential diagnosis of paralytic strabismus.<br />

Ultrasonographic examination. Diseases of the retina and vitreous body, intraocular tumors,<br />

retinopathy of prematurity. Demonstration of the ultrasound diagnostics of the aforementioned<br />

diseases.<br />

Ophthalmoscopy IV. Ward round, examination of patients.<br />

Electrophysiology of vision (ERG, EOG, VEP).<br />

Emergency in ophthalmology. (Sudden and progressive loss of vision)<br />

First aid in ophthalmology. Forms of patching, treatment of eye injuries.<br />

Ophthalmological tasks of the family’s physician. The most common eye complaints and disorders.<br />
