In 2012/13 Internal Medicine I. and II. are taught by the 3rd Department!<br />

First Semester<br />

Lectures with case presentation (3 hours per week)<br />

Introduction to internal medicine. The sick man. The medical interview. The doctor’s<br />

conductance and attitude towards the patient. Basic rules of the medical interview.<br />

Details of history taking. Questions related to the respiratory, circulatory and<br />

gastrointestinal systems.<br />

The physical examination. Inspection. Palpation.<br />

Percussion. Auscultation.<br />

Fever. Taking the temperature. The types of fever curves.<br />

The main symptoms of pulmonary disease. Cough, sputum production, hemoptysis,<br />

dyspnea, wheezing, cyanosis and chest paint.<br />

Physical diagnosis of the common pleural and pulmonary syndromes.<br />

Examination of the heart. Inspection and palpation of the precardial region. Evaluation of<br />

the apical impulse. Percussion of the heart. ECG. The heart sounds (normal and<br />

pathological findings).<br />

Murmurs (Normal and pathological findings).<br />

he pulse. Examination of the vascular system. The pericardium.<br />

The diagnosis of vascular heart disease (1).<br />

The diagnosis of vascular heart disease (2). Heart failure.<br />

The blood pressure. Hypertensive vascular disease.<br />

General signs and symptoms of<br />

the diseases of abdominal organs (gaseous abdominal distention, ascites, painful acute<br />

abdominal diseases).<br />

Examination of the gastrointestinal tract. General diagnostics of liver diseases.<br />

General diagnostics of biliary tract diseases.<br />

General diagnostics of pancreatic diseases. Metabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus).<br />

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). The complete blood count (CBC). General<br />

diagnostics of hematological diseases.<br />

Immunology.<br />

Investigation of the musculoskeletal and the nervous systems.<br />

Practice: Ward rounds (4 hours per week)<br />

Introduction to medical diagnosis. Behaviour in the medical ward. The patient-doctor and the<br />

patient-medical student relationship in practice. Communication with the patient. Medical<br />

confidentiality during medical studies.<br />

The medical documentation. Equipment for physical examination. The practice of medical history<br />

taking.<br />

The technique of physical examination. Inspection. Palpation. Percussion, Auscultation. Continuous<br />

practicing of the basic techniques in history taking and physical examination throughout the<br />

semester.
