1 Formation and excretion of urine. Physiological functions, their significance in the<br />

maintanance of the internal milieau and in healthy functioning of the organism. Renal<br />

circulation. Glomerular filtration.<br />

2 Tubular functions. Mechanisms adjusting the composition of urine. Fluid compartments.<br />

Regulation of extracellular fluid composition and volume. Role of the kidneys in the control<br />

of blood pressure. Micturition.<br />

3 Regulation of acid-base balance. General principles of endocrine physiology. The pituitary<br />

gland. Posterior lobe hormones. Anterior lobe hormones. Growth hormone and physiology<br />

of growth.<br />

4 The adrenal cortex. Blood supply and its control. Innervation. Structure and biosynthesis of<br />

adrenocortical hormones. Effects of glucocorticoids and control of their secretion. Effects<br />

of mineralocorticoids and control of their secretion. Effects of adrenal androgens and<br />

estrogens. Endocrine regulation of calcium metabolism and the physiology of bone.<br />

5 The thyroid gland. Formation and secretion of thyroid hormones. Control of synthesis and<br />

secretion. Transport and metabolism of thyroid hormones. Effects of thyroid hormones.<br />

Clinical correlates. Endocrine functions of the pancreas and the regulation of carbohydrate<br />

metabolism. Hormonal control of intermediary metabolism.<br />
