Rotary Moment - Ted Martin
In his Rotary Moment, Ted told us that he joined this Rotary Club at the time it was formed
so considers himself "first born". He is proud to have perfect attendance from that time
and has found his experience very enjoyable. He is proud of the service that goes with our
club and enjoyed being involved with the conference that we held when Gordon Lang, father
of our club, was District Governor. Ted's father was a Rotarian in Nanaimo and he is proud
to sometimes have gone to the meetings there, once inadvertently sitting in his father's
designated chair. We appreciate Ted's work keeping us solvent every month.
Craig read a thank you card from Deb Willis, the Duck Race Winner who won the print donated by
the Framing Post.
Service Award
Student of the Month
Craig presented a service medal to Carolyn Henshall for doing your
bulletin each week. (He said many kind words but I didn't have my pen in
my hand so they won't appear here.)
Craig introduced Paul Klein, the shop teacher at Timberline School. Paul attended school in
Campbell River and was well known by Carolyn who taught him in Grade 7 and by Craig who was at
Southgate when Paul attended there. Paul's father, Karl
Klein, was a well known PE teacher who made a large
contribution to the students in Campbell River.
Paul introduced Brandon Chaplain who is very involved in
Timberline School. He belongs to both the jazz and concert
bands and is active in the Leadership group. He is known
for his stagecraft in helping the theatre productions. He
recently organized a Tech Club to train students to set up
and run events within the school. he is a "go-to" man
always helping others. he recently refurbished the theatre
storage room with shelves and organized the contents. He is currently building shelves for the
Kinsman trailer and building a table for the special education teacher. He is constantly completing
small projects in the school wood shop.
We congratulate this choice of Student of the Month.
Membership Chairman Kelly Fisher inducted two new members to our club this morning. First,
Darryn Stryga who was sponsored by Mike Rushton. Darryn works at Mt. Washington in retail and
receiving. He has lived in Campbell River since he was four years old. He says he doesn't know our
community very well but is looking forward to learning about it
as he serves it through Rotary.
Leah Tremain - Literacy Report
George Nyman, sponsored by Les Lengyel, has lived in
Campbell River since 1994. He is married and has two married
sons. His career has been with the forest industry. He has
served our community through contributions to the carving
international projects and in building fellowship with out
members. The inside jokes have eluded him and he wants to
get to know us better.
Welcome, Darryn and George.
Next week Cedar School will be holding a book fair. This year "Literacy Now" and "Daybreak
Rotary" will be combining contributions to ensure that every child can purchase a book. A double
the school.
Student Exchange - Ron Fisher
Majo told us that now in her second month she is actually realizing that she is here. She went on a trip
to Ucuelet but couldn't understand why people were surfing in such cold water. She enjoyed her
Thanksgiving dinner but was amazed that she got to eat turkey for the whole week following the feast.
She has become a hockey fan. she wants to experience as much as possible while she is here so would
like to make some money. If you have odd jobs you could help her by giving her an opportunity to do
them.
Ron read a lengthy report from Emily Kiever in Thailand. This will appear on our website thanks to
Wylie Leeson.
