Press release
Plot – more than a SoFa: a Way oF living
The young Berlin design studio osko+deichmann created plot for Brunner –
a space-creating, modular piece of seating furniture for various sitting positions,
which can be integrated into offices, foyers or lounges like a natural
“loungescape”. The open concept of use, which is based on a square module,
fits in well with those who do not only want to sit but lean against, move,
interact and communicate in a relaxed way. “We wanted to create a product
which the user handles in a different way. You should feel free and mobile – this
releases productive energy and promotes creativity,” Dr. Marc Brunner, Managing
Director of the family business of the same name, is convinced. The concept
of plot offers seats adjustable on three levels and interprets the function of
arm and back rest in a completely new way.
“How do we sit, when we are on the road? Do we wait or do we work? Do we meet
and interact? Or do we rest?” These questions led osko+deichmann to the
surprisingly unconventional design of plot. On the basis of a square module,
six combinations of seats and rests can be realised. The middle level – the arm
rest – was designed in a highly flexible way and can be repositioned without
the use of tools. The upper level – the back rest – cannot be changed because
of static reasons and is closely connected to the base element by striking,
powder-coated diagonal bars. Various configurations are possible with this
concept – from individual module and classic sofa to linear structures to
structures spanning corners, islands or structures stretching into a room
which can be extended in all directions. A concept suited perfectly both for
compact as well as for very large floor plans.
Space for Personal Items
For locations at which people carry luggage and bags, plot offers unconventional
variants of the modules with shelves. Larger pieces of furniture can
be extended by space-creating add-ons – trays, tables, planting vessels and
functional wall screens – and can also be divided into different communication
zones. Use of the individual levels is open and flexible: They offer generous
seats and space for laptops, trays and other items.
Appealing to the Senses – Colour and Material
plot is characterized by a carefully developed colour concept which appeals
to the senses and features a subtle mix of earthy, warm or even cooler colours.
The range of colours is adapted to the colour of the lowest cushion and
is available in seven colours; there are also two monochrome options. The
material of the coloured seats is just as appealing: high-quality imitation
leather with a fabric structure and a metallic look combined with side and
back rests in grey Trevira.
“We create objects on the borderline between design, new inventions and art,”
Blasius Osko and Oliver Deichmann describe their design approach. Architecture,
too, is not far away. The observer has the impression of architecture
miniature moving dynamically in a space with shifted levels. The designers
also were inspired by the form and structure of natural cascades of waterfalls,
for example.
hoC – SCulPtural and minimaliSt deSign
Chairs and stools are a new challenge for manufacturers again and again.
How can everyday products like these be designed in such a way that they
offer something new and surprising? Brunner was fascinated by the idea to
extend their large range of contract furniture by a minimalist, high-quality
stool; a sculptural design object of everyday life, which can be used anytime,
everywhere.
With “hoc”, licenced by Davis Furniture USA, the company based in Rheinau/
Germany presents a new product developed by the Stuttgart designers
jehs+laub, which is a new interpretation of the traditional stool: a stool made
of form wood with an extremely reduced designed. Its three identical legs
combine to create the seat in an elegant line – “An easily understandable,
simple structure looking like a sculpture”, say the designers. The inlay of the
wood emphasizes the reduced, straightforward use of forms. By dispensing
with a back rest, sitting is flexible and strengthens the back; this also creates
a relaxed communicative situation which is open on all sides. The well-proportioned
stool is available in two heights – as a bar stool with a footrest and
as a low, version, which is even stackable. Clients can choose among options
in beech with a natural, stained or coated finish or options in oak with a light,
wenge, black stained or matt finish – suitable for various interiors.
Communicating in a Relaxed Way
Undoubtedly a stool has something of the improvised – an object you can
easily move from one place to the other. However, with the new matching
table, which will be presented in Milan for the first time, Brunner now also
offers the possibility to create a harmonious ensemble with the hoc range –
to communicate with your family, friends or colleagues in an uncomplicated
way.
In Profile – Designers and Architects for Brunner
Brunner successfully co-operates with well-known international designers.
Since 2011 osko+deichmann and jehs+laub also are among the designers
working together with the company based in Rheinau. To design their trade
fair stand at the Milan Salone 2012 Brunner again commissioned ippolito
fleitz group after their success last year.
“On the borderline between design, new inventions and art”:
osko+deichmann in profile
During the mid-1990s, Blasius Osko and Oliver Deichmann were inspired by
the former separated Berlin which literally absorbed young creatives from all
over the world. After studying at the University of Arts in Berlin, they started
co-operating professionally in 1998 and founded their design studio “Die
Wunschforscher” (“The Wish Explorers”). Objects on the borderline between
design, new inventions and art are created. At the same time, the designers
develop concepts for fashion and music events. In 2005, they renamed their
studio “osko+deichmann”. Designs by osko+deichmann have already been
exhibited at well-known institutions and museums: at the Louvre in Paris, the
Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein and Berlin, the Cube Gallery in Manchester,
the MoMA in Berlin, the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin, the VIA Gallery
in Paris, the Holon Museum and at the Design Bienniel in Saint-Étienne. In
2011, the Berlin designers started their co-operation with the contract furniture
manufacturer Brunner.
“Designers and manufacturers are like father and mother”:
ehs+laub in profile
The designers Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub have been co-operating for
more than fourteen years under the name of jehs+laub and are based in
Stuttgart. They mainly work in the fields of furniture, lighting and interiors.
In 1992, they completed their education at the University for Design in
Schwäbisch Gmünd with a degree in product design and founded the design
jehs+laub in 1994. Asked how the relation between designer and manufacturer
works, they answer: “It’s like the relation between father and mother.” Next
question: “And who is the father?” Both: “The designer, of course!” Laub: “And
the manufacturer is the mother. It’s her who has to brood and develop, and at
the end their child is born.”
“Defining identity”: ippolito fleitz group in profile
ippolito fleitz group is a multi-disciplinary, international working design
studio based in Stuttgart. Their leitmotif is: “We are identity architects. Together
with our clients we develop architecture, products and communication, which is
always part of a whole and still unmistakeable. That’s how we define identity.”
ippolito fleitz group’s main work lies in the fields of architecture, interior
design, trade fair architecture, design, corporate identity, graphic design and
electronic media. The studio was founded in 2002 by Peter Ippolito and
Gunter Fleitz. Peter Ippolito had several teaching positions, among other at
the University of Stuttgart.
Creating individuality: brunner in ProFile
The family-run company founded in 1977 is managed by Helena and Rolf
Brunner as well as Dr. Marc Brunner. The company has 350 employees.
Among its business fields are the development, production and distribution
of chairs, tables and contract furniture for office and administration facilities,
public spaces as well as care and social facilities. The company based in
Rheinau (Baden) has its pwroducts manufactured at its own production site.
Since Dr. Marc Brunner joined the family business as Co-Managing Director
in 2004, Brunner has turned into a design-oriented company. The strategy
to only work together with outstanding international designers was already
established by company founder Rolf Brunner. “What definitely distinguishes
Brunner from many other manufacturers is our readiness to test technical possibilities
together with the designer. We do not shy away from investing time and
money to make things better still!”
Among the well-known international designers creating products for Brunner
are Wolfgang C. R. Mezger, Archirivolto, Martin Ballendat, lss designer and,
since 2011, jehs+laub and osko+deichmann.
Numerous design awards also contribute to the fact that the company has
turned into a “leading design brand”, according to Dr. Marc Brunner. Among
the outstanding most current examples is the red dot award: communication
design 2011 and the iF communication award 2012 for the Brunner trade
fair stand at the Milan Furniture Fair, designed by ippolito fleitz group. At the
a PoetiC Quality oF Sitting
Trade Fair Stand by ippolito fleitz group at the Milan Salone 2012
After the huge success of their trade fair stand concept in 2011, Brunner also
commissioned ippolito fleitz group in 2012 with the design of this year’s trade
fair stand at the Milan Salone.
The architects again managed to create a fascinating and inspiring space from
the simple, rectangular and unspectacular floor plan of about 100 square
metres. Just as the exhibits by Brunner, the stand concept reflected the topic
of sitting – “spontaneous, straightforward and almost without any limits like
thoughts and inspirations which can develop in contemplative moments of sitting
on a chair”, explain Peter Ippolito and Gunter Fleitz. The whole stand is created
as a setting, which should absorb visitors in an intensive spatial experience
and invite them to try things out.
While the central space in the middle stimulates visitors to sit on the new
products plot and hoc in various ways, the architects designed the walls as
poetic highlights with installations of letters, like on traditional information
tables in hotel lobbies, Italian bars, airports or conference halls: “White letters
on black background form associative figures and open up worlds of thoughts”,
says Peter Ippolito. When coming nearer, word play and poetic sentences
are formed, “formulations and tones just as varied as the individual experience of
sitting on a chair”.
The large, three-dimensional fabric ceiling of clouds lingering above the
pieces of sitting furniture and illuminating the setting also added an emotional,
poetical note – “a unique context for our new furniture,” commented the
