Editorial Policy 

AGS welcomes contributions of family records, 

public record transcriptions, and other information 

of interest to those interested in family history and 

genealogy in general, and in Arkansas specifically. 

Responsibility for the accuracy of information and 

for opinions, omissions, or factual errors is that of 

the contributor. 

Manuscript Submissions 

Submitters of articles and material for possible 

publication in The AFH are requested to send 

typewritten or mechanically generated manuscripts 

on white, 8 1/2 X 11 inch paper, double-spaced, 

one-inch margins on all sides, with all pages 

numbered. The sources from which the material 

was obtained, specific statements of facts, or statistical 

information MUST be documented, that is, the 

specific, detailed source description must be listed 

either within the body of the text or as notes. Previous 

publication of the material in any form must be 

brought to the attention of AGS. AGS encourages 

submissions on IBM compatible computer disks in 

WordStar or ASCII format accompanied by a hard 

copy of the material.

is compiling a 

1995-1996 Resource Directory 

The 1992-1993 edition of the Resource Directory was a success. Our goal was to 

provide sources for reference works on Arkansas. Researchers know the difficulties in 

finding genealogical reference materials that often are not listed in Books in Print and 

are sometimes not available through interlibrary loan. Books in our field tend to be 

published in short runs and are published by small firms and individuals who cannot 

afford to saturate the market with expensive advertising. 

There is no charge to individuals and societies who wish to have their resources included. 

We want to know about Arkansas resource books, libraries, societies; family histories 

with Arkansas connections; family newsletters that touch on Arkansas families; 

Arkansas maps; and any other source on Arkansas helpful to genealogists. We need to 

know about products that are currently for sale--price, ordering information, etc. 

We'll be doing some mailouts to Arkansas societies, libraries, and publishers of Arkansas 

materials in the coming months, but we invite everyone to tell us about any resource 

they have for sale about Arkansas. Folks need not be AGS members to have their 

books included in the resource directory (though we do extend an invitation for them to 

join). 

Our objective is to make the resource directory a one-stop shopping center for genealogists 

interested in Arkansas. Please help us by contributing information. We hope to 

have the 1995-1996 Resource Directory published by February 1995 and we'll advertise 

it in The Arkansas Family Historian and in genealogical publications.

197, Kincaid, KS 66039. This was submitted for the 

query section some time ago. II is offered here not 

only for the family data it contains, bul as an 

example of chronological research, 

Moses T. Hannah was the youngest son of John 

Hannah and his 2d wife, Jean Trimble, b. c1798 in 

TN, probably Blount Co.; d?, m, 16 Dec 1822 in 

Blount Co., AL., Rebecca Phittsfurt, b. c1797 VA; 

d.? (this is the name given in the marriage record. 

Nowhere else has this name appeared--likely a 

clerk's interpretation). Children: 

1. ? [girl), b. between 1820-25, probably in AL 

2. Sarah Jane, b. 4 Dec 1628 AL, m. William M. 

Crawford 

3. John? b. c1829 AL 

4. Mary A., b. c1832 AL

1830 Census of Blount Co., AL, had Moses T. 

Hannor with 1 male under 5, 1 30-40, 1 female 

under 5, 1 5-10, 1 20-30. Males undoubtedly 

Moses and probably son John; femaleS, Sarah 

under 5, a probable dau. age 5-10. Who is female 

10-15? The older one is no doubt Rebecca. 

1840 Census, Moses is in index of Blount Co., AL 

1850 Moses T. Hannah is in Spring River Twp., 

Lawrence Co., AR as: Moses T., age 52, b. TN; 

Rebecca, age 53, b. VA; Mary A., age 18; Alabama, 

age 15; Susan, age 12, all b. AL 

In the same township, 1850, was the William M. 

Crawford family, As she is identHied by her marriage 

record as Sarah Jane Hannah, the 1830 

Moses Hannah had a female in her age group, and 

no other Hannah family appears in Lawrence Co., n 

seems probable she is one of Moses daughters. 

Also in Lawrence Co., Black River Twp" is a John 

Hannah in the household of Peter Stout (prob. 

hired hand), it seems probable he is the boy in the 

1830 census, Not proven! 

Where did this family go after 1850? Have found 

none of the family other than Sarah and possibly 

Alabama after this,

Sarah Jane {Hannah) Crawford, whose family were 

nearby. is believed to also be a dau. of Moses T. 

Hannah.

Women of Arkansas 

Pulaski County 

One of the shining lights in Arkansas Methodism in 

early days was Mrs. Ann Conway, mother of 

Congressman Henry W. Conway and Governor 

James S. and Elias N. Conway. 

This saintly woman was affectionately known by all 

as "Mothar Conway'. She was eloquent In prayer, 

and often led, with trembling lips and simple trust· 

ing faith, the public congregat.lon In their devotions. 

When attending the services of the church Mrs. 

Conway habitually sat in a large old fashioned splitbottomed 

chair, placed near the alter rail. This ole 

chair was the object of much veneration and was 

permitted to occupy its accustomed place in the 

Church long- after its beloved owner had gone to 

share her master's throne. I am 01 the belief that 

this old chair was still In the church when the build· 

ing was taken possession of by the Federal Military 

Authorities in 1863.

letter from Capt Harvey A. Wallace to his wife, 

Achsah Wood Wallace, who was living in Rusk Co., 

Texas, Achsah was the daughter of Aaron Wood, a 

Revolutionary War soldier, who died in York Dis· 

trlct, SC. Achsah Wood married Harvey A. Wallace 

in York Dis!., SC. This branch of the family moved 

to Rusk Co., Texas. Other Wood family members. 

along with close friends and relatives, moved to 

Pulaski Co., Arkansas, some time during the 1850s. 

These people from York Dis!., SC, now living in 

Arkanses, are the people Harvey Wallace refers to 

as having visited. They lived In North Pulaski 

County, between Jacksonville and the Ebenezer 

Community, a little north of where the Uttle Rock 

Air Force Base is now located. Harvey was with 

the 19th Texas Infantry, camped at Camp Nelson.

My beloved Wife, I this morning have taken my pen 

to write you a few lines to inform you how we are 

getting along in camp. I am in moderately good 

health. I have been able for duty every day since I 

came here. The health of the compeny is only 

moderately good. The whole Army is suffering with 

colds, the worst of coughs. We have had one bad 

case at this time in the company. William Whitfield 

is down with Typhoid fever. Will be a very bad 

case. Marion? Grimes has Typhoid fever 100. 

There is several other men not well. There is loiS of 

cases of fever In our Reg. We losl three men in our 

Reg. this morning and some 1 or 2 more lhal will 

die loday from pneumonia and Typhoid Fever. 

Achsah, they are Burying soldiers all the time here. 

There is so much sickness in the different Regl· 

ments. I hope the health will improve. Well, 

Achseh, William and me got Permission to leave 

camp last Tuesday evening and slay until Thurs· 

day. Jim Wood [a] came in that day so I got Bee· 

tens horse. Jim had two. William and me went 

with him and stayed all night. It is ten miles to his 

house. Jim has a good place and plenty of every· 

thing. He is dOing fine here. He don't owe a cent,

kill between 3 and 4 thousand pounds of Pork this 

year. Jim was very kind. So was his wife. She is 

the aame Rachel[b] yet. They have four children.

We went to Bob's[c] this morning. He lives a mile 

from Jim's. He has a good place, a good new 

house and a good stock and 7 children. Mary 

Douglas[d] lives with him. Manerva[e] has been 

dead some 2 months. Bob was at Douglases(f]. 

We went there to dinner. Douglases 2 oldest boys 

are in Kentucky. His next Boy has been lying for a 

month low with Typhoid Fever. They treated us 

very kind. Sarah[g] is lean but the same old Sarah. 

Douglas has made money every year since beeing 

here. After dinner we went to Jesy Wilsons. They 

are well fixed Old Jesy has splendid house. 

Elias[h] and his children are there. His wife died 

this fall. Old Aunt Peggy[l] was very kind. We went 

to see Darky Wilson. She Ilves in sight. She Just 

has three daughters at home. The oldest about 

growing. Darky looks younger than I expected to 

see her. She is poor. John James[j] died this fall in 

the Army here. Robert and William[k] were both 

taken prisoners at Island Ten. She has not heard 

from them since. She was so kind. Told us to 

come back to see her and she would give us some 

butter. She lives B miles from camp. We came to 

John Cook's that night. He is four miles from 

camp. Cousin Anny[l] looks pretty old. They have 

Mary with them. She has a beby about ten months 

old. John Cook has a house lull of corn. He has a 

good stock of callie. He says he can do as well 

here as he wants to. He takes his ease and lives 

well. We hed a good supper and breakfast there. 

We went to Andrew Gingles for dinner. His wife 

was gone to Jim Neely's. Neely's wife is about to 

die. Andy treated us very kind. We came to the 

camp that evening both a little sick, a change of 

diet did not agree with us. We eat a little too 

strong. Gingles has a trunk I want, it is as large 

again as mine and verry strong. He has lost the 

key. I think I will send over and swap for it as mine 

is entirely too Small. Duncan[m] is gone out to 

Gingles today. Duncan has a cOld and has done 

no duty this week. Hays Is unwell and does no 

duty. Brooks is sick the most of the time but still 

helps all he can. He is in Command today. William 

is able for duty but still has a bad cough. John Ray 

keeps stout. Rhodes Is complaining most of the 

time of his back. Achsah, we have got Arms for the
